Curriculum Structure:
First Year:
You’ll begin with foundational courses such as PHYS 170/170L, PHYS 272/272L, and PHYS 274/274L (General Physics I–III with labs) together with MATH 241–244 (Calculus I‑IV) and the astronomy sequence ASTR 241 (Foundations of Astrophysics I). These build core skills in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and differential calculus, setting the stage for rigorous astrophysics.
Second Year:
Continue with ASTR 242 (Foundations of Astrophysics II), ASTR 300/300L (Observational Astronomy and lab), and PHYS 310/311 (Theoretical Mechanics I & II). This year deepens your understanding of astrophysical systems and introduces observational techniques using UH’s Maunakea facilities.
Third Year:
You’ll take PHYS 350 (Electricity & Magnetism) and PHYS 450 (Electromagnetic Waves), plus observational project work via ASTR 301 and starting your ASTR 399 Directed Study. This year bridges theory, instrumentation, and guided research experience.
Fourth Year:
Advanced courses include PHYS 480 (Quantum Mechanics I) and PHYS 485 (Professional Ethics). You also select electives such as ASTR 320 (Astronomical Spectroscopy), ASTR 423 (Stellar Astrophysics), ASTR 426 (Galaxies & Cosmology), or ASTR 430 (The Solar System), and complete ASTR 494 (Senior Research Project over two semesters).
