Sc.B. Biophysics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Brown University

Program Overview

The Biophysics Sc.B. at Brown University is an interdisciplinary, quantitative programme that brings together physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to explore how physical principles govern living systems. Students build strong analytical and quantitative skills while completing advanced interdisciplinary coursework and a required research project with a faculty advisor, preparing them for scientific research and further study in areas such as biophysics, biotechnology, medicine and related fields.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students establish the mathematical and scientific foundation required for biophysics through courses such as MATH 0090 – Single Variable Calculus, Part I, MATH 0100 – Single Variable Calculus, Part II, and BIOL 0200 – The Foundation of Living Systems. Depending on their preparation and course planning, students also begin the required physics and chemistry sequences.

Year 2: Students typically progress into the core physical-science requirements, including PHYS 0050 – Foundations of Mechanics, PHYS 0060 – Foundations of Electromagnetism and Modern Physics, and CHEM 0330 – Equilibrium, Rate, and Structure. MATH 0180 – Multivariable Calculus further develops the mathematical skills needed for quantitative analysis.

Year 3: Students deepen their chemistry and biology background through courses such as CHEM 0350 – Organic Chemistry I and additional biology or neuroscience courses selected with advisor approval. Students can also begin developing a specialised academic focus through advanced courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics or related fields.

Year 4: The final stage emphasizes advanced interdisciplinary study and independent research. Students complete the concentration’s two-semester directed-research requirement through options such as BIOL 1950/1960 – Directed Research in Biology, CHEM 0970/0980 – Chemistry Undergraduate Research, or PHYS 1980 – Physics research, alongside approved electives, including at least two above the introductory level.

Note: Brown’s Biophysics Sc.B. is structured as a concentration rather than a rigid four-year course sequence, so the exact timing of individual courses can vary according to a student’s academic plan and concentration advising.

Focus Areas

Biophysics, quantitative biology, molecular biophysics, physical biology, biological systems, physics, chemistry, mathematics, neuroscience, quantitative methods, interdisciplinary life sciences, scientific research

Learning Outcomes

Students develop a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics; gain an understanding of the interdisciplinary relationship between life and physical sciences; develop the ability to identify and analyze questions in biophysics; apply quantitative methods to biological and physical-science problems; and complete a faculty-supervised research project applying knowledge developed throughout the concentration.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The Brown Biophysics Sc.B. is an undergraduate concentration administered through Biology Undergraduate Education. Brown’s official programme information does not identify a separate external professional accreditation for the Biophysics Sc.B.; its academic structure instead emphasizes interdisciplinary scientific training and a required research component.

Reputation

Brown reports that 96% of graduating seniors in 2021 went directly into employment opportunities or graduate/professional school, while 82% of undergraduate students participated in summer internships, fellowships or research projects that year. Brown’s Biology programme also highlights pathways into medicine, business, research and teaching, with alumni outcomes searchable by concentration through the university’s Office of Institutional Research.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Research is a central part of the Biophysics Sc.B., with students required to complete two semesters of directed research through Biology, Chemistry, Physics or a related STEM discipline. Brown provides undergraduate research opportunities through practical training, independent study and faculty-led research, while summer research pathways can include the University’s UTRA programme and other funded opportunities.

Students can gain exposure to advanced scientific equipment and research environments relevant to molecular and quantitative biophysics, including:

  • NMR spectroscopy: Brown’s Structural Biology Core Facility provides access to 850 MHz, 600 MHz and 500 MHz Bruker NMR spectrometers for biomolecular structural and dynamics studies.

  • X-ray crystallography: Students involved in appropriate research can work in an environment equipped for X-ray diffraction and structural modelling.

  • Biophysical techniques: Facilities include circular dichroism spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and microscale thermophoresis.

  • Research facilities: Brown’s BioMed Core Facilities include Structural Biology, Proteomics, Bioimaging, Genomics, Flow Cytometry and Magnetic Resonance Imaging facilities.

  • Independent research: Students can undertake faculty-supervised projects through Biology, Chemistry or Physics, with research potentially developing into longer-term projects or a senior thesis.

  • Summer opportunities: Brown’s SPRINT programme provides Brown-generated and student-generated research, internship and teaching opportunities; the Summer 2026 search included more than 300 Brown-generated opportunities.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The Biophysics Sc.B. provides a foundation for careers and further education spanning biomedical research, biotechnology, computational biology, scientific analysis and healthcare-related fields. Brown’s Science & Engineering career pathway identifies roles such as research assistant, clinical research coordinator, research technician, analyst, computational biologist and engineer among the job titles held by alumni in science and engineering fields.

Typical job roles: Research Assistant, Biophysics Researcher, Biomedical Research Technician, Clinical Research Coordinator

  • Career services: Brown’s Lizzie & Jonathan Tisch Center for Career Exploration provides career advising, resume and interview support, internship and job searching through Handshake, employer events and alumni connections.

  • Industry and research opportunities: Brown’s career platform provides access to jobs, internships and research opportunities, with more than 9,000 employers having posted opportunities on its student-focused job board.

  • Science and engineering pathways: Brown reports that nearly 10% of graduates immediately pursue careers in science and engineering across private and public-sector organizations.

  • Research preparation: The required two-semester research component gives students direct experience conducting scientific investigation with faculty supervision.

  • Graduate and professional preparation: The interdisciplinary foundation can support progression into graduate study and professional fields related to biophysics, biology, chemistry, physics, medicine and biomedical research.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates can pursue master’s or doctoral study in biophysics, biology, biochemistry, physics, chemistry, biomedical sciences, computational biology and related disciplines. The programme can also provide a foundation for professional pathways such as medicine and other health-related graduate programmes.
