Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University at Albany SUNY

Program Overview

The BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University at Albany provides an interdisciplinary foundation in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, with a strong focus on understanding the molecular and genetic basis of cellular processes. Through laboratory-based learning, students develop skills in areas such as DNA sequencing, gene cloning, biochemical kinetics and spectroscopy while preparing for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medicine, engineering or advanced scientific research.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students establish their scientific foundation through General Biology: Molecular and Cell Biology and Genetics, General Biology: Ecology, Evolution, and Physiology, General Chemistry and Calculus. Writing, humanities and social-science coursework also forms part of the first-year curriculum.

Year 2: Students progress into Introductory Genetics, Introduction to Biological Investigations, Organic Chemistry and Chemistry laboratories. This stage also includes additional general education requirements and is when students normally submit their application to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major.

Year 3: Students build more advanced scientific knowledge through Physics I and II, Biological Chemistry, and higher-level biology coursework. Students also complete an additional 300-level Biology or Chemistry laboratory and can incorporate professional development, research or internship preparation.

Year 4: The final year emphasizes advanced biochemistry and molecular biology through courses such as Physical Chemistry or Biophysical Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Laboratory in Molecular Biology. Students also complete advanced electives and can use supervised undergraduate research or additional laboratory work toward their degree requirements.

Focus Areas

Biochemistry, molecular biology, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, biological chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry, DNA sequencing, gene cloning, biochemical kinetics, spectroscopy, quantitative biology and experimental research.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop an understanding of cellular and sub-cellular structure and function, biochemical pathways and thermodynamics, while learning to apply quantitative and analytical methods to biological problems. The program also develops students' ability to design experiments, collect and interpret scientific data, use the scientific method and communicate research findings effectively.

Professional Alignment

The University at Albany is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). No separate specialized professional accreditation is identified by the university for the BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Reputation & Employability

The university does not publish a program-specific QS or Guardian ranking for the BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. UAlbany describes the degree as research-focused and identifies pathways into biotechnology, medicine, pharmaceuticals and engineering, while also highlighting progression to medical school, PhD programs and other graduate or professional study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides substantial laboratory and research-based learning alongside classroom study. Students can work with experimental techniques in molecular biology and biochemistry, undertake supervised research, complete internships and use advanced life-science and chemistry facilities supporting areas such as molecular genetics, spectroscopy, spectrometry, imaging and tissue culture.

Practical opportunities include:

  • Supervised Undergraduate Research: ABIO 399/499 allows junior and senior students to design experiments, test hypotheses, conduct laboratory work, analyze results and draw scientific conclusions.

  • Research Communication: Students completing supervised research prepare scientific papers and may present their findings through oral or poster presentations at the Annual Research Symposium.

  • Molecular Biology Research: The Molecular Biology Core provides instrumentation and research resources used in molecular genetics, microbiology, virology, developmental biology, functional genomics and related fields.

  • Structural Chemistry Facilities: Students benefit from access to research infrastructure supporting spectroscopy, spectrometry, calorimetry and related analytical techniques.

  • Tissue Culture: The Tissue Culture Core provides a Biosafety Level 2 facility for culturing and manipulating primary tissue and mammalian cell lines.

  • Internships: Students can complete ABIO 496 Internship in Biological Sciences for academic credit, gaining practical work or professional-training experience outside the classroom.

  • Research Partnerships: Undergraduate researchers have worked with faculty and scientists connected with the Life Sciences Research Facility, Albany Medical College, New York State Department of Health, David Axelrod Institute and RNA Institute.

  • Study Abroad: The four-year plan includes study abroad as a credit-bearing professional-development option.

  • Honors Research: Students pursuing the honors option can complete an independent study project and an oral presentation.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is designed to support both entry into the life-sciences workforce and progression into graduate or professional education. UAlbany specifically identifies careers such as doctor, chemist, chemical engineer, research scientist, pharmaceutical researcher and physician assistant, while the broader Biology department identifies opportunities in laboratory, research, quality-control, environmental, scientific communication and industry roles.

Typical career paths include:

  • Research Scientist

  • Biochemist

  • Molecular Biology Researcher

  • Chemist

  • Pharmaceutical Researcher

  • Biotechnology Researcher

  • Laboratory Technician
