Program Overview

NC State’s Biological Sciences (BS) gives students a strong and flexible foundation in the life sciences, covering areas such as genetics, microbiology, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and biotechnology. Students can follow the general biology pathway or choose a specialized concentration based on their interests, making the degree a good fit for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, environmental science, and further postgraduate study.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students start by building a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and scientific thinking. Courses such as LSC 101 Critical and Creative Thinking in the Life Sciences, BIO 181 Introductory Biology: Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, and BIO 183 Introductory Biology: Cellular and Molecular Biology introduce students to key biological concepts while CH 101 Chemistry – A Molecular Science and CH 102 General Chemistry Laboratory develop their chemistry and laboratory skills.

Year 2: Students move into more detailed areas of biological and chemical science and begin developing a deeper understanding of how biological systems work. Courses such as BIO 270 Introduction to Evolution, CH 223 Organic Chemistry II, and CH 224 Organic Chemistry II Laboratory help students strengthen their knowledge while preparing them for more advanced biological study.

Year 3: Students explore genetics, microbiology, physiology, and other areas that connect biological theory with real-world applications. Courses including MB 351 General Microbiology and GN 311 Principles of Genetics build specialist knowledge, while learning experiences such as BIO 269 Research in the Life Sciences II: Guided Research, BSC 492 Professional Experience, BSC 493 Research Experience, and BSC 494 Teaching Experience allow students to gain practical experience.

Year 4: In the final year, students have greater flexibility to focus on areas that match their academic and career goals through advanced life-science, STEM, laboratory, and research electives. Depending on their interests, they can explore subjects such as BIO 416 Cancer Cell Biology, GN 451 Genome Science, BIT 476 Applied Bioinformatics, MB 411 Medical Microbiology, and MB 441 Immunology.

  • Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences: NC State’s CURE courses allow students to work on research questions for which the answers are not already known. Depending on the course, students can gain experience with experimental design, bioinformatics, data analysis, troubleshooting, and scientific communication.

  • Internships and professional experience: Students can undertake paid or volunteer internships and other professional experiences related to their academic interests.
