Biological Physics, Structure and Design (BPSD)

2 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Washington

Program Overview

Biological Physics, Structure and Design (BPSD) at the University of Washington is an interdisciplinary graduate research program exploring the relationship between structural, computational, and chemical biology. It prepares students to investigate the atomic-level structures of proteins, RNA, and DNA, with applications in vaccine development, drug design, protein engineering, and understanding biological structure–function relationships.

Curriculum Structure

Important: BPSD is an interdisciplinary graduate training program, not a standalone master's degree. It serves as an entry pathway for PhD programs in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biological Structure, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Neurobiology & Biophysics. Therefore, a fixed master's year-wise curriculum is not published.

Year 1 – Foundational Study:

Students entering through participating PhD departments develop foundations in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, and biophysics. Their training focuses on understanding biological macromolecules, protein structures, molecular interactions, and experimental research methods.

Year 2 – Advanced Research:

Students develop specialized expertise through interdisciplinary research in structural biology, computational biology, protein design, and molecular modelling. Research activities involve investigating protein, RNA, and DNA structures and their biological functions.

Focus Areas: Structural biology, biological physics, computational biology, chemical biology, protein engineering, molecular biology, protein structure prediction, macromolecular interactions, drug design, vaccine development.

Learning Outcomes: Analyse biological macromolecular structures, understand protein and nucleic acid interactions, apply computational methods to structural biology, investigate molecular structure–function relationships, develop interdisciplinary research skills, understand protein design techniques, contribute to drug discovery and vaccine research.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): No separate professional accreditation is specified. BPSD provides interdisciplinary research training through participating graduate departments and prepares students for advanced doctoral research.

Reputation (Research & Employability): The program includes distinguished faculty such as David Baker, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist whose research focuses on computational protein design. Students benefit from interdisciplinary faculty expertise across biochemistry, chemistry, bioengineering, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and neurobiology.
