Students in the GPS graduate program study the earth and other planets to understand their origin, composition, and development, and to examine the effects of their resulting physical and chemical characteristics on the history of life, on the environment, and on humanity.
Common Application, a Statement of Purpose, Test scores: GRE, TOEFL, and/or IELTS test scores to be sent directly to the California Institute of Technology (Institutional Code 4034), An official electronic copy of your transcripts or online grade reports issued by your college or university, 3 letters of recommendation, a CV or Resume. US universities use a holistic admissions review. Beyond grades and standardized test scores, they weigh the strength of your overall profile to understand who you are as a student and a person.
Profile Assessment: Science applicants are generally assessed on the rigour of their Mathematics and laboratory-science coursework. Relevant preparation may include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Calculus or Statistics, depending on the intended field. Research, science fairs, Olympiads, laboratory exposure, independent investigation and environmental or community-science projects can demonstrate scientific curiosity and analytical thinking.Extracurricular activities: Estimated extracurricular contribution: 15–25%. Caltech particularly values scientific curiosity, experimentation, and collaborative problem-solving. Research, mathematics, science competitions, engineering projects and independent technical work may be helpful. Creative activities and interests outside STEM can also demonstrate personality and balance.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school.
