Microbiology (BS)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

North Carolina State University Raleigh

Program Overview

NC State’s Microbiology (BS) helps students understand the fascinating world of microorganisms and viruses, including how they grow, function, interact with their surroundings, and affect human, animal, and environmental health. It is a strong choice for students interested in laboratory science, biotechnology, healthcare, or research, with opportunities to focus on areas such as Microbial Biotechnology, Microbial Research, or Microbial Health Sciences.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students begin by building a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and scientific thinking. Courses such as BIO 181 Introductory Biology: Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity, BIO 183 Introductory Biology: Cellular and Molecular Biology, and CH 101 Chemistry – A Molecular Science introduce key concepts they will use throughout the degree.

Year 2: Students move into more specialised microbiology topics through courses such as MB 251 General Microbiology and MB 254 Inquiry-Guided Microbiology Lab, combining classroom learning with practical laboratory work. They can also explore human health through MB 311 Medical Microbiology and MB 312 Medical Microbiology Laboratory, developing a better understanding of microorganisms that cause disease and how they are investigated.

Year 3: Students expand their knowledge into genetics, biochemistry, research, and scientific communication. Courses such as GN 311 Principles of Genetics, BCH 451 Principles of Biochemistry, and ENG 333 Communication for Science and Research help students understand how microorganisms function at the molecular level while developing skills for communicating scientific ideas.

Year 4: In the final year, students explore advanced areas of microbiology through courses such as MB 414 Microbial Metabolic Regulation, MB 451 Microbial Diversity, and MB 452 Microbial Diversity Lab. They also study current developments through MB 480 Current Issues in Microbiology and can choose advanced subjects related to areas such as microbial biotechnology, infectious diseases, microbial ecology, molecular virology, bacterial pathogenesis, and microbiomes.

NC State highlights microbiology as a field with applications across biotechnology, food and fuel production, and human and animal health. The university also prepares Biological Sciences students for opportunities in government, private industry, research, healthcare, and advanced professional or graduate study, including areas such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, genetics, biomedical sciences, and public health. No program-specific QS or Guardian employability ranking is provided on the official Microbiology (BS) page.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

NC State’s Microbiology BS gives students opportunities to gain practical laboratory and research experience alongside their classroom studies. Students work with real microbiological techniques, investigate research questions, analyse experimental results, and develop scientific communication skills through inquiry-based laboratory courses and research experiences.

The program also allows students to explore areas such as medical microbiology, microbial diversity, biotechnology, genomics, and biomanufacturing through specialised courses and research opportunities:

  • Inquiry-guided microbiology: MB 254 Inquiry-Guided Microbiology Lab gives students practical experience with microbiological techniques while working on an extended research project, analysing results, and presenting their findings.

  • Faculty-led research: MB 360 Scientific Inquiry in Microbiology: At the Bench allows students to design and conduct experiments, maintain laboratory notebooks, analyse complex data, and communicate their research findings. Projects have included antibiotic discovery from soil microbes, microbial pathogens in food, commercial probiotics, and sequencing Delftia isolates.

  • Medical microbiology laboratory: MB 312 Medical Microbiology Laboratory provides hands-on experience with culturing and identifying microorganisms while introducing students to laboratory approaches used to investigate infections and disease-related questions.

  • Microbial diversity: MB 452 Microbial Diversity Lab gives students practical experience while exploring the diversity and characteristics of microorganisms.

  • Phage research and genomics: Through MB/BIT 210 Phage Hunters and MB/BIT 211 Phage Genomics, students can isolate bacteriophages, study their characteristics, analyse and annotate genome sequences, and contribute their findings to a wider research initiative.

  • Molecular biotechnology techniques: Students can choose practical courses such as BIT 467 PCR and DNA Fingerprinting, BIT 465 Real-time PCR Techniques, BIT 466 Animal Cell Culture Techniques, BIT 476 Applied Bioinformatics, BIT 477 Metagenomics, and BIT 479 High-Throughput Discovery.

  • Biomanufacturing experience: Students interested in industrial microbiology and biotechnology can explore courses involving fermentation, recombinant microorganisms, upstream biomanufacturing, and related production processes.

  • External learning: BIT 492 External Learning Experience provides an opportunity to receive academic credit for approved practical learning outside the standard classroom environment.

  • Professional experience: Students can use courses such as BSC 492 Professional Experience and BSC 493 Research Experience to gain structured experience related to their career or research interests.

  • Course-based undergraduate research: NC State incorporates authentic research into several microbiology courses, allowing students to work on projects that go beyond routine laboratory exercises and develop skills in experimental design, critical thinking, data analysis, and scientific communication.

  • Research facilities: Students can take advantage of NC State’s broader Biological Sciences research environment, which includes laboratories and facilities supporting microbiology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology, and related research areas.
