The Faculty has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 secondary specialisms available. We have a well-established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond. The PGCE History encourages a thoughtful, reflective and critical approach to the teaching of history in the secondary school. Devised jointly by history education specialists at Manchester Metropolitan University and history mentors in school, it reflects both changes and debates at a national level. Practising history teachers make valuable contributions to university sessions. Subject pedagogy focuses on a reconceptualisation of subject knowledge understanding around subject content, key concepts and skills. There is an important emphasis upon an inclusive approach to teaching,including plus attention to gender, ethnic and cultural diversity. There is also attention to e-learning.
You will normally have a minimum of a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree awarded by a UK university, or an equivalent higher education qualification. Your degree needs to support the subject knowledge requirements of the national curriculum for history. GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in English Language and Mathematics, Experience in educational settings, Interview and personal Statement. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check and DfE Fitness to Teach test are also required. IELTS Band 7 with no less than 6.0 in any element.
