Bachelor of Engineering Honours Mechanical and Bachelor of Business

5 Years On Campus Dual-bachelors Program

University of Newcastle

Program Overview

The University of Newcastle offers a double Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Business degree that is designed to develop both business acumen and technical engineering skills over a period of five years. The dual-degree is ideal for students who want to know about the working of machines and systems, as well as develop an understanding of how to manage teams, projects, and organisations. It prepares graduates for careers in fields where both engineering expertise and business acumen are valued.

Curriculum Structure:
The course balances theory and practice in both disciplines. Students learn:
Foundation mathematics, physics, and engineering mechanics to establish core technical competencies.
• Mechanical engineering foundation subjects in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanical design, advanced manufacturing, and mechatronics.
• Business studies in management, marketing, economics, accounting, and business law, which introduce students to organisational behaviour and financial decision-making.
Capstone engineering design project in the final year to apply engineering abilities to real problems.
• Business electives allow the students to focus their degree in the areas of entrepreneurship, international business, or finance.

Accreditation:
The mechanical engineering component is accredited by Engineers Australia, which guarantees that it is of national professional standards. The graduates qualify for engineer-in-training status and Chartered Engineer (CPEng) registration in the long term.

Campus Location:
The program is primarily delivered at the Callaghan campus in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. The campus is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, design studios, and collaborative learning spaces for both engineering and business students.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

There is strong emphasis on practical experience and industry engagement in the degree at the University of Newcastle:
• Compulsory 12 weeks of industrial experience in a mechanical engineering setting for students to apply classroom knowledge to real projects.
• Business students have the opportunity to intern with leading Australian and global companies, with exposure to business practice across a variety of industries.
Project-based learning is incorporated throughout both degrees, fostering teamwork and creativity.
• Students can also be involved in clubs and student-led competitions such as Engineers Without Borders and Innovation Challenges, which develop leadership and problem-solving skills.
• The university encourages international study experiences, with students able to complete coursework or internships abroad as part of their degree.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The university offers a comprehensive suite of services to enhance student success and career readiness:
One-on-one career coaching and planning sessions.
• Resume building and interview skills workshops.
• Employer networking events, industry panels, and career expos on campus.
• Access to a large alumni network working across engineering, consulting, manufacturing, government, and start-ups.

Employability:
Graduates of this double program are well positioned for careers that blend technical vision with business expertise. Common roles include mechanical engineer, design engineer, project manager, product development engineer, business analyst, supply chain manager, operations manager, and engineering consultant. Employers value the ability to think both analytically and strategically, something this degree develops well.

Further Academic Progression:
After graduation, students can go on to develop their skills further with a Master of Engineering, Master of Business Administration (MBA), or postgraduate specialisations in data analytics, sustainability, or entrepreneurship. Graduates also follow pathways to Chartered Engineer status or technical leadership positions within organisations.
