Architecture and design integrated foundation year

1 Years On Campus Foundation-program Program

University of Brighton

Program Overview

In this foundation year, you’ll immerse yourself in a creative and inclusive studio environment, developing the confidence, design skills, and portfolio needed to study at degree level. You’ll explore the design process through creative projects and technical workshops, developing core skills in drawing, making, digital practice, presentation, communication, and critical thinking.

Curriculum Structure

Term 1: Building Foundations
Your journey begins with hands-on analogue skills—think observational and hand-drawing techniques, alongside physical and 3D modelling. These exercises help you understand different scales and develop a strong visual language.

Term 2: Digital Integration
Building on your analogue skills, you’ll delve into digital drawing, modelling, and fabrication. Projects will develop your knowledge of the design process and technical ability, combining traditional methods with modern technology.

Term 3: Final Project & Portfolio
This term focuses on a final project within your chosen discipline, allowing you to produce a portfolio that documents your development and final design project. The project will be specific to your discipline and draw together all the skills learned over the year, preparing you for your degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or Product Design.

Focus Areas

Design thinking, sketching, 3D modelling, digital fabrication, portfolio development, critical analysis, and presentation skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the foundation year, you’ll have developed a strong portfolio, honed your design skills, and gained the confidence to progress onto your chosen degree course.

Professional Alignment & Accreditations

The foundation year offers an integrated pathway to:

  • Architecture BA(Hons)
  • Interior Architecture BA(Hons)
  • Interior Design BA(Hons) from 2026 entry
  • Product Design BSc(Hons)

Successful completion of the foundation year means that you can progress directly to the degree you have chosen. The Architecture BA(Hons) is accredited by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
