The BA (Hons) Film: Pathfinder Joint International Programme at Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design + Technology (IADT) is an exciting three‑year European film degree that blends traditional filmmaking craft with modern media innovation across multiple partner institutions in Europe. It’s perfect for creative storytellers who want hands‑on experience in directing, cinematography, screenwriting, editing, immersive media, and collaborative international production.
Curriculum structure
Year 1: In your first year, you’ll build a solid foundation in the art and language of film, exploring modules such as Introduction to European Film, Story & Origins, World Cinema, and Sustainable Filmmaking, while sharpening practical skills in Cinematic Craft Skill 1 and 2. You’ll also take part in Cineclub – Film Analysis & Critic to refine your critical eye and will come together with peers from across Europe for a collaborative filmmaking project that kick‑starts your creative journey.
Year 2: Year two broadens your perspective with subjects like European Cinema, New Ways of Seeing, Radical Creativity and Technology, and Media & Society: The Ethics and Politics of Film, blending creative experimentation with conceptual understanding. Courses such as Entrepreneurial Thinking: Business Survival Kit and Collaborative Project prepare you for professional life by fusing artistic ambition with real‑world production challenges.
Year 3: In your final year, you’ll focus on advanced creative development through modules like Artistic Research & Reflection, Co‑production and Distribution, and Advanced Project Development and Cinematic Craft Skill. The semester culminates in Artistic Research & Writing and the Graduation Project — a professional‑level film or moving‑image piece that showcases your skills and personal voice.
Focus areas: International film production, narrative and non‑fiction directing, cinematography, screenwriting, editing, sound design, immersive media (VR/AR), world cinema, sustainable filmmaking, and creative entrepreneurship.
Learning outcomes: Graduates will be able to create high‑quality cinematic and digital media content, lead or collaborate on international productions, apply critical analysis to film and media, and adapt artistic and technical skills for careers across film, television, immersive media, and emerging storytelling platforms.
Professional alignment (accreditation): The programme is externally evaluated and aligned with European quality standards under the European Approach to Quality Assurance and is validated by QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland), positioning students as globally oriented filmmakers with industry‑relevant skills.
Reputation (employability rankings): IADT’s National Film School — the home institution for this programme — is a recognised centre of excellence with state‑of‑the‑art facilities and is part of a school known for producing graduates who work across the creative industries and have achieved international honors including Oscar, BAFTA, and IFTA recognition.
At IADT’s Film: Pathfinder Joint International Programme, learning goes far beyond theory — you’ll be making films, working with professional-standard tools, and collaborating internationally from day one. As part of the National Film School, students get hands-on experience in real film and TV studios, green-screen facilities, editing suites, and broadcast-level production equipment. Throughout the course, you’ll work on group projects each year, participate in international co-productions with students from partner schools in Lisbon, Brussels, and Sofia, and build a portfolio of films, documentaries, VR/AR projects, and collaborative media work that mirrors industry practice.
Here’s how your practical experience is brought to life on this course:
Industry-standard production facilities: Access TV and film studios, green-screen stages, control rooms, and editing suites that mirror professional environments in broadcast and cinematic production.
Collaborative filmmaking projects: In your first year, all students take part in a joint filmmaking project with peers from partner institutions, giving you real international production experience.
Cross-institution mobility: In the second year, you relocate to another FilmEU partner school for two semesters, working with different teams, cultural contexts, and equipment, building adaptability and broad creative skills.
Hybrid and co-taught modules: Many modules are co-taught by lecturers from different European institutions and use digital collaboration tools, preparing you for professional workflows that are remote or distributed.
Professional film tools and software: You’ll work with contemporary editing, sound, and media platforms integrated into practical modules to ensure you graduate technically confident.
Networking and industry exposure: Guest talks, workshops, and masterclasses from industry professionals give you insights into current practices and potential career pathways.
Graduates from the Film: Pathfinder Joint International Programme at IADT leave with a strong blend of creative, technical, and international production skills that prepare them for a wide range of roles in the screen industries.
