M.S Voice

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Victorian College Of The Arts

Program Overview

Having the actor's words heard clearly was so important to the ancient Greeks that the actors wore masks with megaphones built into them. Although one actor would play several parts in each play, each character had a mask that identified them to the audience. Thanos Vovolis, a contemporary Greek mask-maker, believes that not only did the small megaphones amplify the voice and help project it to the back of the auditorium, but that they would alter the acoustical qualities of the actor, thereby, literally giving each character a unique vocal range and timbre.
