The Master of Computer Science at Edith Cowan University (ECU) is designed for students who want to develop advanced knowledge and practical skills in computer science and prepare for professional careers in the digital technology industry. The 2-year, 180-credit-point program combines contemporary computing technologies with practical application, industry-influenced learning, and substantial project work.

Curriculum Structure:

In the first year, students develop core knowledge through Networking Technologies, Systems Analysis and Database Design, Programming Principles, Cyber Security, Scripting Languages, and Artificial Intelligence. These units establish strong technical foundations across programming, databases, networking, security, and AI.

In the second year, students study Principles of Project Management, Machine Learning, and Current Topics in Computer Science. In the final semester, students complete either a 60-credit-point Applied Project or, if approved, a Professional Placement in Computing and Security, allowing them to apply their knowledge to a substantial practical or workplace-based experience.

Focus Areas: Computer science, programming, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber security, networking, databases, scripting, systems analysis, project management, and emerging computing technologies.

Learning Outcomes: Analyse complex computer science problems, apply advanced technical and cognitive skills, design sophisticated computing solutions, work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and independently plan and complete substantial ICT projects.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and is an AQF Level 9 Master's Degree (Coursework), providing professional preparation for advanced computing careers.

Reputation (Employability Rankings): The program has a strong practical and industry-oriented focus, with its curriculum and capstone components influenced by industry. Students can undertake a semester-long Work Integrated Learning placement with an industry partner or complete an Applied Project. Graduates can pursue roles such as Software Engineer, Programmer, Systems Analyst, Apps Developer, Data Analyst, Systems Architect, and Web Developer.
