Master of Energy Change (Advanced)

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Australian National University

Program Overview

The Master of Energy Change (Advanced) at The Australian National University is ideal for students who want to build advanced knowledge and research skills for the shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. The program combines energy technology with environmental, scientific, economic, legal and policy perspectives, while giving students the opportunity to specialise through advanced subjects and a major research project.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students begin by building a strong understanding of energy and climate issues through subjects such as Energy Resources and Renewable Technologies, Complex Environmental Problems in Action and Principles of Energy Generation and Transformation. They can then explore wider aspects of the energy sector through subjects such as Sustainable Energy Law, Energy Economics and Climate Change: Science, Society & Policy.

Students can tailor their studies with technical and practical subjects including Photovoltaic Technologies, Solar Thermal Technologies, Wind Energy, GIS and Spatial Analysis, Urban Energy and Energy Efficiency and Industrial Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation. This gives them the flexibility to combine renewable energy technologies with sustainability, environmental management, economics and policy.

Year 2

The second year places a greater focus on advanced learning and independent research. Students complete the Masters Research Project, where they investigate a significant energy, climate change or sustainability issue and apply research methods to develop evidence-based findings.

Students can also select advanced subjects that match their interests, such as Integration of Renewable Energy into Power Systems and Microgrids, Photovoltaic Power Plants, Nuclear Fuel Cycle, Reactor Science and Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation. The combination of advanced coursework and research experience prepares students for professional roles in the energy sector and further academic study.

Focus Areas

Renewable energy, energy generation, energy transition, climate change, energy economics, sustainable energy law, environmental policy, photovoltaic technology, solar thermal technology, wind energy, energy efficiency, decarbonisation, power systems, microgrids, nuclear energy, environmental management and energy research.

Learning Outcomes
