Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Students build a strong foundation through Graduate Academic and Research Skills for Public Policy and Graduate Preparatory Social, Political and Policy Analysis, developing essential research and policy skills. They then explore key climate topics through subjects such as Climate and Its Applications, Climate Change: Science, Society, and Policy, International Climate Change Policy and Economics and Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation.
Students can broaden their knowledge through subjects such as Environmental Governance, Environmental Policy, GIS and Spatial Analysis, Environmental Economics for Public Policy and Energy Resources and Renewable Technologies. Field-based options such as Vietnam Field School and Island Sustainable Development: Fiji Field School can also help students connect their learning with real-world environmental and development challenges.
Year 2
As the program is 1.5 years full-time, students move into the final stage by developing more specialised knowledge and undertaking research-focused study. Options include Research in Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation, Research in Environmental and Climate Change Policy, Independent Research Project and Research Project, allowing students to investigate important climate-related issues in greater depth.
Students can further customise their studies with subjects such as Water Management, Energy Economics, Governing the Energy Transition, Climate Law, Sustainable Business Strategy: Net Zero and Beyond and Environmental Economics. This combination allows students to bring together scientific, economic, legal, environmental and policy perspectives when examining climate challenges.

The course is delivered in person at The Australian National University (ANU), Canberra, Australia.
Bachelor’s degree or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0.
Bachelor’s degree with GPA 4.0/7.0 plus 3 years of relevant full-time work experience, or a Graduate Certificate with GPA 4.0/7.0 plus the required work experience.
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or 48 units of postgraduate study with a minimum GPA of 4.0/7.0 may also satisfy the academic requirement.
Applicants may qualify with 10 years of relevant full-time work experience, or through the specified GRE scores combined with at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
ANU calculates the Bachelor’s GPA using all grades and also excluding the final semester, and uses the higher result for admission.
IELTS Academic/UKVI Academic requires an overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component; tests must be taken at an IELTS testing centre.
TOEFL iBT requires an overall score of 80 with minimum section scores of 20 Reading, 20 Writing, 18 Listening and 18 Speaking for study commencing before 1 January 2027; ANU institution code is 0506.
