Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Students begin with core subjects such as Complex Environmental Problems in Action, Environmental Policy and Sustainable Futures: Thinking in Systems, which introduce key environmental challenges, policy approaches and sustainable development. They can also develop practical research and analytical skills through subjects such as Environmental Measurement, Modelling and Monitoring, Introduction to Environmental and Social Research, GIS and Spatial Analysis and Impact Assessment and Evaluation for Environmental and Development Projects.

Students can start building their preferred area of specialisation through subjects such as Biodiversity Conservation, Climate Change: Science, Society and Policy, Water Management, Environmental Governance and Sustainable Urban Systems. This flexibility allows students to connect environmental science with policy, resource management, sustainability and social perspectives.

Year 2

Students deepen their knowledge through Contemporary Perspectives in Environment-Society Interaction and advanced subjects related to their chosen area. Depending on their interests, they can study subjects such as Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation, Land and Catchment Management, International Environmental Policy, Environmental Economics and Water Science.

Students can also choose additional advanced Environment and Development subjects and ANU electives to further customise their studies. High-performing students may have the opportunity to transfer to the Master of Environment (Advanced) and undertake a more substantial research component.
