Program Overview

The Master of Psychology (Clinical) at UNSW Sydney is a 2-year full-time postgraduate professional degree designed to prepare students for professional practice as clinical psychologists. It combines evidence-based coursework, supervised clinical practice and a substantial clinical psychology research thesis, following a scientist-practitioner model.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1: Covers adult, adolescent and child clinical psychology, psychological assessment, treatment planning, neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation, psychology of health and illness, professional and ethical practice, and supervised clinical practice.

Year 2: Builds advanced clinical knowledge and skills through further coursework, supervised clinical practice and completion of the three-part Clinical Psychology Research Thesis. Students undertake a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice across the UNSW Psychology Clinic and at least two other field placement settings.

Focus Areas: Clinical Psychology, Psychological Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment Planning, Cognitive Behavioural Practice, Neuropsychological Assessment and Rehabilitation, Child and Adolescent Psychology, Adult Psychology, Clinical Research and Professional Practice.

Learning Outcomes: Graduates will develop advanced skills in psychological assessment, diagnosis and treatment, apply evidence-based clinical interventions, conduct clinical research, assess and treat diverse client groups, and practise ethically and professionally.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as the fifth and sixth years of psychology study. Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and can progress through an approved registrar program toward endorsement in Clinical Psychology.

Reputation (Employability): The program provides more than 1,000 hours of supervised clinical experience across the UNSW Psychology Clinic and external placements in areas including adult mental health, psychiatry, medical psychology, neuropsychology, child and family services and community health.
