2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Ontario Institute of Technology University (Ontario Tech University) provides a two-year, professionally oriented Master of Engineering (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering. It is committed to equipping students with higher engineering theory as well as practical skills. It is designed for individuals who want to broaden their understanding of mechanical systems, robotics, manufacturing, and thermal sciences and gain experience in practical applications of engineering industries. It integrates theoretical foundations with project-oriented learning in real-world contexts, allowing students to become holistic professionals capable of solving complex engineering challenges.
Curriculum Design:
The MEng in Mechanical Engineering features a broad and flexible curriculum that includes:
Advanced Core Courses in subjects such as fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, heat transfer, and system modeling.
Technical Electives that allow students to specialize in fields of interest like renewable energy, robotics, or biomechanics.
Engineering Reports or Projects that enable students to apply what they have learned in the solution of actual problems for industry.
No thesis requirement, well-suited for those who want to focus on applied engineering rather than research.
Accreditation:
Ontario Tech University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science maintains standards of quality in academic studies and follows quality assurance standards as recommended by Ontario's Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
While the MEng is a course-based program and not accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) (which accredits undergraduate programs alone), it is accepted across the nation and globally as a legitimate postgraduate degree.
Campus Location:
The university is located in Oshawa, Ontario, on the outskirts of Toronto.
The campus is cutting-edge with state-of-the-art research facilities, interactive learning spaces, and a healthy culture of robust innovation.
The students are fortunate to have tight affiliations with Greater Toronto Area (GTA) industries, offering fabulous opportunities for networking and placement.
The MEng program at Ontario Tech is industry-focused and emphasizes experiential learning through:
Industry-Supported Projects: Students work on real-world projects with companies, applying engineering concepts to address challenges in the energy, automotive, or manufacturing sectors.
Co-op and Internship Programs: Optional, students can opt for co-op programs to receive hands-on industry experience. These are typically booked with GTA firms as well as abroad, e.g., roles in mechanical design, automation, and high-tech manufacturing.
Capstone and Applied Research Projects: Many courses incorporate hands-on lab work, simulations, and design projects that are an approximation of actual engineering work.
Student Engineering Clubs and Competitions: Opportunities exist to be part of clubs focused on robotics, 3D printing, or Formula SAE design teams where students collaborate on real builds and compete nationally.
The university Career Centre offers an assortment of services to support students to move forward in their careers, including:
Career planning, resume writing and practice interviewing.
Access to engineering career fairs, job boards, and industry guest lectures.
Networking with alumni and employers in engineering fields.
Employability:
Program graduates are well prepared for mechanical design engineer, project engineer, robotics engineer, or manufacturing systems analyst positions.
Many of the graduates are employed in automotive, aerospace, energy, robotics, and advanced manufacturing areas, particularly in Ontario and Canada.
The technical profundity and practical problem-solving emphasis of the program is appealing to employers.
Academic Progression:
While the MEng is generally regarded as an ending professional degree for engineers, students can choose to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other interdisciplinary areas such as Mechatronics, Materials Science, or Sustainable Energy Systems.
Other students also transition to engineering management programs or pursue designations like P.Eng after gaining sufficient work experience in Canada.
