Master of Applied Science Mechanical Engineering

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Ottawa

Program Overview

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa is a two-year full-time graduate research degree offered by the Faculty of Engineering. The program is designed to provide students with advanced education and research ability in mechanical engineering, and in most areas of mechanical engineering. Students work through a combination of courses and a research project, and their culmination being a thesis.

Curriculum Structure

The MASc program consists of the taking of graduate courses and a thesis in research. Course topics may encompass:

  • Advanced Fluid Dynamics

  • Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

  • Mechanical Design and Analysis

  • Robotics and Control Systems

  • Materials Engineering

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • The curriculum is centered around hands-on experience through research projects in state-of-the-art laboratories.

  • The students have the opportunity to work alongside industry sponsors and on cross-disciplinary research projects.

  • The university's co-operative education (co-op) program can also be followed, with compensated industry experience in the same industries.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • The MASc in Mechanical Engineering alumni are equally suitable for research and development jobs, higher engineering, and pursuing a Ph.D.

  • The research-oriented nature of the program provides a solid foundation to continue pursuing a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or other related fields.

  • Additionally, the knowledge obtained while pursuing the program comes in handy when working as a researcher in universities, industry, and government research institutes.
