The School of Physical Science and Technology of Xiamen University has a department of physics, an astronomy department, and a biomimetic and soft matter research institute. Xiamen University s physics discipline was founded in 1923, and has played an important role in the development history of Chinese physics. It is one of the first five universities to establish a national semiconductor discipline, and has cultivated outstanding alumni such as Xie Xide and Academician Zeng Rongsheng.

The School of Materials of Xiamen University was established in 2007. It is one of the important bases for the cultivation of high-level materials professionals and high-level materials science research in China. The Energy Institute was developed on the basis of the Energy Institute. The Energy Research Institute was established in September 2007.
