Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, specialisation in Space Technology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Technical University Of Denmark

Program Overview

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Specialisation in Space Technology at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a 2-year master's programme focusing on electrical engineering technologies for space applications. The specialisation combines spacecraft instrumentation, electromagnetic systems, attitude control and remote-sensing technologies.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1: Students build advanced knowledge through satellite systems, space systems engineering, spacecraft instrumentation, remote sensing and image analysis, supported by electrical engineering and technology courses.

Year 2: Students develop further expertise through advanced subjects such as digital systems, digital instrumentation, radar and radiometer systems, microwave techniques, electromagnetics and antenna technologies, together with electives and the Master’s thesis.

Focus Areas: Satellite Systems, Spacecraft Instrumentation, Space Systems Engineering, Remote Sensing, Image Analysis, Attitude Control, Radar and Radiometer Systems, Electromagnetics, Microwave Engineering and Antenna Technology.

Learning Outcomes: Graduates develop the ability to analyse and design electrical and electronic systems for spacecraft and satellite applications and apply signal and statistical processing techniques to remote-sensing data.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The specialisation forms part of DTU’s Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and provides advanced engineering preparation for space-technology applications.

Reputation (Employability): The programme develops specialised skills relevant to the space industry and other high-technology sectors, including satellite systems, electronics, radar, remote sensing and advanced instrumentation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The programme combines advanced electrical engineering theory with practical work in space technology. Students can apply their knowledge through laboratory activities, engineering design and satellite-related projects.

Key aspects of experiential learning include:

  • Satellite Development: Students can participate in developing complete student satellites or specific satellite components, systems and methods.

  • Spacecraft Instrumentation: Practical work can involve instruments such as magnetometers and star cameras.

  • Electromagnetic Systems: Students work with technologies such as antennas, radar and radiometers.

  • Remote Sensing: Students apply signal and statistical processing techniques to satellite and aircraft remote-sensing data.

  • Engineering Design: Students gain practical experience using IT-based design tools and advanced engineering methods.

  • Master’s Thesis: Students complete an individual advanced project involving research, design or development in their selected area.

These activities allow students to apply electrical engineering knowledge to practical space-technology challenges.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The specialisation provides opportunities in the space sector as well as broader high-technology industries. Its combination of electrical engineering, satellite systems and advanced instrumentation gives graduates a flexible technical profile.

Key opportunities include:

  • Space Industry: Opportunities in satellite systems, spacecraft instrumentation, space electronics and space technologies.

  • Space Agencies: Graduates can pursue opportunities with international space agencies and organisations involved in space activities.

  • Satellite & Communication Technology: Skills can be applied to satellite communication, radar, antennas and related technologies.

  • Remote Sensing: Graduates can work with satellite and aircraft data, image analysis and Earth-observation applications.

  • High-Technology Industry: Electrical engineering and advanced electronics skills are applicable across a wide range of technology companies.

  • Research & Development: Graduates can pursue R&D positions and may continue to PhD-level research.

DTU specifically identifies opportunities in international space corporations, Danish space companies, space agencies and public institutions, as well as advanced-technology companies.
