Program Overview

Cultural studies/Kulturwissenschaften/cultural studies are part of an innovative international field of research that has developed since the 1960s, particularly in the English-speaking and German-speaking world. This field of research emphasizes the material and symbolic dimension of cultures as well as their actors. The objects of daily life, human institutions, ways of thinking, systems of norms and values are questioned in their way of producing and transmitting various forms of culture. This approach aims to go beyond the traditional boundaries between disciplines, which fully corresponds to the decompartmentalization between disciplines practiced by French-style Germanic studies.
