MA in Systematic musicology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Hamburg

Program Overview

Systematic musicology focuses its research interests on the physical, biological, psychological, cultural and social foundations of music, its forms of existence and their effects. With the help of empirical-experimental methods, systematic musicology deals in particular with the question of how physically measurable sound processes (acoustics) are received by the ear, processed neuronally and become objects of perception (psychoacoustics, music psychology). This is followed by an examination of reception and aesthetic evaluation (experimental reception research, music aesthetics), taking into account the social and cultural context (music sociology, music ethnology / comparative musicology).
