Program Overview

In the master's program Linguistics / General Linguistics students learn to analyze the functions and characteristics of linguistic phenomena across languages. Learning objectives are, on the one hand, the purposeful use of empirical methods, the critical assessment of theoretical concepts, and a sovereign handling of modern methods of analysis of the subject. On the other hand, gaining insights into the general characteristics of human languages - related to their development, their relationship to cognitive processes and to social action practice. For this purpose, structural knowledge is imparted from at least two non-Indo-European languages.
