The combination of life sciences and computer science is currently one of the most exciting fields of research. Due to the rapid development in the information technology the computer became the indispensable aid in the life sciences. Bioinformatics is the application of methods from computer science to scientific problems in the life sciences. So-called high-throughput experiments have found their way into many areas of chemistry, biology, medicine and pharmacology. Bioinformatics develops software tools for the preparation, evaluation and analysis of this data. It plays a key role in the modern life sciences, since only with sophisticated computer systems can knowledge be generated from the large amounts of data and made available for the prediction of biological phenomena.
