MSc Human Computer Interaction

1 Years On Campus Masters Program

University College Dublin

Program Overview

The MSc in Human Computer Interaction at University College Dublin gives you the skills to design and evaluate technologies that people actually enjoy using. It’s perfect for anyone curious about how humans interact with digital systems and who wants to create intuitive, impactful user experiences.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Full-Time, 12 months)
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in HCI theory and practice. Core modules like Quantitative Data Analysis, Research Theory and Practice, and UXD: User-Centered Design teach you how to collect and interpret data and apply human-centered design techniques. In the spring, you’ll explore advanced topics such as AI & Ethics and Topics in HCI, helping you understand the ethical considerations of interactive systems and dive deeper into specialized areas of HCI. During the summer, you’ll complete either an HCI Design Project or an HCI Thesis, applying your skills to a real-world challenge under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

(If you are studying part-time, the same learning blocks are spread over two academic years to fit your schedule.)

Focus Areas

Human-centered design and evaluation, UX research methods, applied theory in HCI, data-driven user insights, societal and ethical aspects of technology

Learning Outcomes

You will be able to analyze human-technology interactions using social science and design methods, design and prototype intuitive interfaces, assess usability rigorously, carry out independent research or project work with real users, and communicate your findings clearly in academic and professional settings.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This is a Level 9 Master’s degree awarded by University College Dublin, recognised across Europe and internationally for postgraduate study in Human-Computer Interaction and related fields.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

UCD is consistently ranked among the world’s top universities and is highly regarded in Europe for graduate employability. Graduates have an advantage when pursuing careers in UX research, interaction design, product development, data-driven roles, or further academic study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UCD’s MSc in Human Computer Interaction, you’ll gain practical, real-world skills alongside your academic learning. The programme is designed so that theory meets practice: through hands-on design work, structured research projects, and opportunities to tackle live HCI challenges, you’ll learn how to think, prototype, and evaluate interactive systems just like professionals do. You will work with digital tools and research methods used in user experience and interaction design, supported by UCD’s computing facilities and IT services, and benefit from being part of the HCI@UCD research group — an interdisciplinary hub where collaborative design and user-centered research happens beyond the classroom.

This hands-on approach includes experiences such as:

  • Project-based design and research work – a core part of the programme involves an HCI Design Project or Thesis where you apply research methods and design principles to real human-computer interaction challenges. You will engage with users, build prototypes, and test your solutions with real data.

  • Professional practice insights – the Professional HCI Practice module gives structured engagement with industry roles in UX and HCI, helping you develop teamwork and workplace-ready skills.

  • Access to digital tools and computing facilities – you will use university-wide IT services, computer labs, and software platforms to complete assignments and collaborate on group projects.

  • Interdisciplinary research community – as part of the HCI@UCD research group, you will engage with ongoing research, seminars, and events that connect you with faculty and researchers working on real-world projects across technology, society, and design.

  • Academic support and library resources – UCD’s libraries provide extensive digital and print resources essential for literature review, research methods, and data analysis, supporting both project and thesis work.
