Master of Engineering Flight Test Engineering

1 Years On Campus Masters Program

South East Technological University

Program Overview

The MEng in Flight Test Engineering at SETU Carlow is Ireland’s only specialist program dedicated to preparing engineers for the demanding field of flight testing. It suits graduates from aerospace, aeronautical, or aircraft engineering backgrounds who want to master both the theoretical and applied skills needed to design, conduct, and analyze flight tests for manned and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Semester 1 (Autumn):
Students begin with Aerial Vehicle Platforms and Flight Control Systems, gaining a deep understanding of aircraft design and control. Modules such as Electric and Hybrid Propulsion and Quality and Environmental Testing introduce cutting‑edge propulsion technologies and the standards required for safe and sustainable aviation.

Year 1 – Semester 2 (Spring):
The second semester emphasizes applied testing and analysis. Courses like Flight Testing, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and Data Acquisition and Analysis train students in measurement techniques, instrumentation, and data reduction methods. Students also study Aviation Finance and Legislation, ensuring they understand the regulatory and economic frameworks of the aerospace industry.

Year 1 – Summer Semester (Capstone):
Students complete a Dissertation (Engineering), applying their knowledge to a substantial research project. This capstone integrates technical expertise with practical application, often involving collaboration with test pilots, design engineers, and certifying staff.

Focus Areas

Flight testing, aerial vehicle platforms, propulsion systems, avionics, UAVs, data acquisition, aerospace legislation.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to design and conduct safe flight tests, analyze raw performance data, evaluate propulsion and avionics systems, and publish results for certification and operational manuals.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The program is a Level 9 Master of Engineering degree under Ireland’s NFQ, ensuring international recognition and alignment with aerospace industry standards.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

SETU emphasizes strong industry collaboration, and graduates acquire a unique skill set not offered by any other program in Ireland, making them highly competitive in aerospace and aviation sectors. Trinity College Dublin is ranked in the QS top 100 globally, while SETU’s engineering programs are recognized for their applied industry focus and employability outcomes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the most distinctive features of the MEng in Flight Test Engineering at SETU Carlow is its strong emphasis on hands‑on practice. Students don’t just study flight theory — they actively engage with real testing environments, advanced simulators, and applied research projects. The program is designed to replicate the professional world of aerospace engineering, giving students direct exposure to the tools, facilities, and collaborative projects that define modern flight testing.

To make this experiential learning concrete, here’s what you can expect:

  • Garmin G1000 Flight Simulator: SETU is the only technological university in Ireland with a Garmin G1000 flight simulator, located in the Centre for Aerospace Engineering at the Carlow campus. This facility allows students to experience realistic flight environments, covering subjects from flight dynamics to avionic systems, in a safe and controlled setting.
  • Applied Flight Testing Modules: Courses such as Flight Testing, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and Data Acquisition and Analysis are taught through practical sessions, where students measure aircraft performance, analyze raw data, and determine flying qualities.
  • Group Research Projects: Students collaborate on structured research projects and a final dissertation, often involving teamwork with test pilots, design engineers, and certifying staff, mirroring industry practice.
  • Specialist Facilities: Delivered through SETU’s Centre for Aerospace Engineering, students have access to laboratories and testing environments dedicated to aeronautical systems and propulsion technologies.
  • Digital Tools & Software: Training includes data acquisition systems, simulation software, and avionics platforms, ensuring graduates are proficient in the digital tools used in aerospace testing.
  • Library & Academic Resources: Full access to SETU’s library and electronic databases supports both technical research and dissertation work.
  • Industry Orientation: Modules such as Aviation Finance and Legislation connect students directly to the regulatory and economic frameworks of the aerospace sector, preparing them for certification and compliance roles.

This combination of flight simulation, applied testing, and industry‑aligned modules ensures that graduates of SETU’s MEng in Flight Test Engineering are not only academically accomplished but also practically prepared to thrive in aerospace testing and certification.
