The MSc Qualifier in Economics at UCD is designed for students who wish to progress into one of UCD’s MSc programs in economics but do not yet meet the direct entry requirements. It suits graduates with a background in economics who need supplemental coursework, or those from related disciplines (such as statistics) who require additional economic training before advancing to a master’s program.


Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Autumn Semester)
Students take a tailored selection of modules agreed with the program coordinator, ensuring their learning bridges gaps from previous study. Options include Statistics for Economists, Irish Economy, Economic Policy Analysis, Introduction to Financial Economics, and advanced modules such as Health Economics, Econometrics, and International Money & Banking. This semester builds a strong foundation in applied and theoretical economics.

Year 1 (Spring Semester)
The second semester deepens knowledge with modules such as Intermediate Macroeconomics, Game Theory, European Economy, Economics of the Environment, and Public Economics. Students may also explore advanced topics like International Trade Economics, Experimental Economics (Lab Experiments), and Advanced Econometrics: Time Series. This stage emphasizes analytical skills, quantitative methods, and exposure to specialized fields.

Capstone Requirement
The program comprises 30 ECTS credits across six modules, with all lectures delivered during daytime hours, Monday to Friday. Students must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.08 in the Qualifier to be eligible for progression into UCD’s MSc programs.
