Program Overview

This program offers advanced knowledge of European Union institutions, policy‑making processes, and governance frameworks. It suits students eager to explore the dynamics of political power and policy across multiple levels of government, whether they come from a political science background or related fields.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Autumn Semester

Students begin with Graduate Seminar in Institutions and Policies of the European Union (PO5017), which builds a strong foundation in how the EU is organised and formulates policies. Alongside this, Graduate Research Methods (PO5005) equips students with essential skills in social science research design. Electives such as Public Administration Theory and Practice (PA6011) or International Relations (PO5016) allow students to tailor their studies toward governance, comparative politics, or theory.

Year 1 – Spring Semester

The focus shifts to multi‑level governance through the Graduate Seminar in European Governance (PO5010), exploring the role of public administration in EU systems. Students also progress their dissertation work with Research Methods (MP6062), gaining expertise in both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Electives such as Representative Democracy in Europe (PO5232), Comparative Climate Policy and Politics (PO5252), or Global Justice (PO5222) provide opportunities to specialise in democracy, sustainability, or international political theory.

Summer Semester

Students complete an independent Dissertation (PO5042), conducting original research under expert supervision. This capstone project allows them to apply theoretical and methodological skills to a topic of their choice, often linked to career ambitions in governance, policy, or international organisations.

  • Library and Digital Resources: UL’s Glucksman Library provides extensive access to EU documentation, political science databases, and digital archives, ensuring students can work with primary sources and cutting‑edge research tools.
  • Dissertation Supervision: Each student undertakes an independent dissertation (PO5042), supported by one‑to‑one mentoring from faculty in the Department of Politics and Public Administration. This project often aligns with career goals, such as EU policy analysis or NGO advocacy.
