Recent generations have benefitted from unprecedented economic and social progress thanks to the abundance of energy provided by fossil fuels. However, all the evidence suggests that this period of plenty is coming to an end: on the one hand, because it is increasingly difficult to obtain supplies of fossil fuels; on the other, because the scale of their impact on the environment is a cause of growing concern.
