2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Master of Science in Architecture at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, is a two-year, full-time postgraduate programme that combines architectural design, theoretical studies, research, and practical project work. The programme explores architecture at architectural, urban, and territorial scales, integrating design with structural engineering, construction, environmental sciences, social sciences, history, and the visual arts. Teaching is conducted in French and English, and students are expected to have an excellent command of one language and a good command of the other.
Curriculum Structure:
The programme consists of three semesters of coursework, design studios, theoretical studies, and project work, followed by a semester dedicated to the final Master’s project. Students select an orientation that guides their choice of studios and courses.
Year 1:
Students develop advanced knowledge of architectural design, theory, construction, and interdisciplinary approaches. Through design studios, research activities, and theoretical coursework, they explore architectural challenges and develop skills in analysing and designing buildings and urban environments.
Year 2:
Students deepen their expertise through specialised coursework, design studios, and independent project development. The programme culminates in a Master’s project combining a theoretical statement with an independently developed architectural project.
Focus Areas:
Students can choose among five orientations: Form – Data, Habitats – Housing, Cities – Territories, Sauvegarde – Resources, and Types – Typologies. These explore areas such as digital design, housing, urban development, architectural conservation, sustainability, and architectural theory.
Learning Outcomes:
Graduates develop advanced architectural design and research skills, critical thinking, interdisciplinary problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to address environmental, social, technical, and urban challenges through architectural practice.
Professional Recognition:
The degree confers the title of EPF-qualified Architect, according to EPFL’s official programme information.
Reputation (Employability):
EPFL provides a research-oriented, multidisciplinary learning environment that prepares graduates for architectural practice, design research, urban development, and work on sustainable built environments.
