March Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

De Montfort University

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at De Montfort University is a two-year master’s designed to help you step confidently toward becoming a registered architect. It’s ideal for students who already hold a Part 1 (or equivalent) and want to advance their design talent, technical skills and research capability through an immersive studio-based programme.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You’ll build your design voice through studios that explore how architecture responds to society, culture and place. Alongside this, you’ll strengthen your technical understanding through modules that look at construction, materials and building performance, supported by architectural theory and humanities to deepen your critical thinking.

Year 2

The second year is about applying everything you’ve learned to a major design-led thesis project. You’ll refine research, sustainability and technical detailing to deliver a final architectural proposal — the kind of work that becomes the centrepiece of your professional portfolio.

Focus Areas

Design studios, contextual and thematic design, building technology, architectural theory, research and final thesis.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates develop a confident design approach, a strong grasp of technical and environmental performance, and the ability to turn complex ideas into well-resolved architectural proposals suitable for professional practice.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The degree is RIBA-accredited and prescribed by the ARB, granting exemption from Part II — a key milestone on the path to becoming a registered architect in the UK.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

The programme is well regarded for preparing students for practice and producing industry-ready portfolios, supported by strong graduate outcomes and employer recognition.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At DMU, the MArch Architecture experience is built around doing rather than just reading. You’ll spend most of your time in design studios, workshops and digital labs, learning how real architects think, communicate and build. Whether you’re sketching early concepts by hand or fabricating full-scale details, you’ll have access to the tools and spaces that help you turn ideas into architectural reality.

This hands-on learning includes:

  • Dedicated postgraduate studio spaces with computer workstations, large-format printing and access to 3D printers, giving you the freedom to develop digital drawings and physical models side-by-side.

  • Specialist model-making and fabrication workshops inside the Vijay Patel Building, equipped for woodwork, metalwork, water-jet cutting and rapid prototyping — perfect for testing construction ideas and materials.

  • Advanced digital design facilities supporting CAD, BIM and industry-standard visualisation software so you can produce professional drawings, renders and technical documentation.

  • Collaborative project culture, where small design groups work together during studio sessions, tutorials and critiques — closely mirroring professional practice and encouraging idea-sharing.

  • Real-world design briefs that challenge you to address major architectural questions such as high-density living, sustainability, and material innovation, allowing you to explore both practical and speculative design futures.

  • Guest lectures and talks from leading architects and researchers, giving you insight into current debates in practice, new technologies and emerging opportunities in the profession.

The combination of studios, workshops, digital tools and professional engagement gives you the confidence to build a portfolio that reflects how you think, design and communicate as an architect.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MArch Architecture at De Montfort University step into careers where design skill, technical knowledge and professional confidence really matter. Many go on to work as Architectural Assistants, Urban Designers, Project Managers or Building Conservation Specialists — and because the programme grants exemption from ARB/RIBA Part II, you’re already on the recognised pathway toward becoming a fully registered architect in the UK.

DMU supports your professional journey at every step:

  • Dedicated career support for architects and designers, including one-to-one career coaching, portfolio and CV reviews, interview preparation and lifelong access to career services after graduation.

  • Opportunities for professional experience, with internships and placements available during your studies to strengthen your portfolio and industry connections.

  • Strong graduate outcomes, with many alumni securing roles in well-known architectural practices and design studios in the UK and internationally.

  • Long-term value of accreditation, as the MArch provides exemption from ARB/RIBA Part II — a major milestone that stays with you throughout your career and brings you closer to full professional registration.

  • High employer confidence, as the programme’s studio-based training, technical rigour and professional focus are recognised across the industry.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the MArch, students can progress to ARB/RIBA Part III to qualify as registered architects in the UK. For those interested in research or teaching, further study at PhD level is also an option, with opportunities to specialise in areas such as sustainable design, urban futures, architectural technology or theory.
