MArch Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Liverpool John Moores University

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a 2-year master’s designed to sharpen your architectural design skills and prepare you for professional practice. It’s perfect for students who already have an architecture background and want to take their creative, technical and urban thinking to the next level.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll explore contemporary urban design and how architecture shapes everyday life in cities. Studio projects are grounded in real-world locations, asking you to respond to cultural, social and environmental needs while developing your own design identity.

Year 2
The final year focuses on a major design thesis where you develop a comprehensive architectural proposal from concept to detailed design. You’ll integrate structure, sustainability, technology and aesthetics to demonstrate readiness for professional architectural practice.

Focus areas: Urban design and regeneration, contextual architecture, dwelling and housing, advanced studio design, research-driven practice.

Learning outcomes: Graduates develop strong design confidence, the ability to analyse and respond to complex urban contexts, and the technical depth required to take projects from idea to buildable proposal.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The programme provides RIBA Part 2 and ARB Part 2 exemption — key steps toward becoming a registered architect in the UK.

Reputation: LJMU architecture graduates are recognised for being both creatively ambitious and technically prepared, which translates into strong employability in UK and international practice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At LJMU, the MArch Architecture is built around doing, not just studying. You’ll be creating, experimenting and collaborating in real architectural studio environments, with access to the same kinds of tools and processes used in professional practice. From hands-on model-making and digital prototyping to exhibitions and collaborative studio culture, every part of the programme is designed to help you develop confidence as a designer.

You’ll get access to impressive learning resources and facilities that shape your everyday studio experience, including:

  • Specialist design studios and purpose-built workshops inside the John Lennon Art and Design Building, equipped for model-making, 3D printing, laser cutting and precision fabrication.

  • Digital tools such as 3D printers, laser scanners, VR equipment and high-performance design computers to support architectural modelling and immersive visualisation.

  • A studio-based learning culture with group projects and design critiques that mirror how real architecture practices work.

  • Opportunities to showcase your work in exhibition and gallery spaces, gaining public exposure and experience presenting design concepts visually and professionally.

  • Dedicated support through tutoring and mentorship, making sure you grow creatively while building strong technical and professional skills.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MArch Architecture at Liverpool John Moores University step into the industry with strong design ability, technical confidence and a recognised professional qualification. Many move directly into architectural practice or related design fields, taking on roles where creativity and problem-solving meet real construction and development needs.

Typical roles include: Architect, Urban Designer, Design Consultant, and Architectural Researcher — and the degree gives you the professional credibility and portfolio strength to compete for these positions.

You’ll be supported in building your future through:

  • LJMU’s Student Futures careers service, offering professional guidance, portfolio and CV support, interview preparation, employer connections, and opportunities for internships and part-time roles on campus.

  • Strong graduate outcomes, with the majority of architecture graduates working or in further study within 15 months of finishing the programme, and earning competitive early-career salaries.

  • Professional recognition that lasts, as the MArch provides RIBA Part 2 and ARB Part 2 accreditation — essential for progressing toward becoming a registered architect in the UK and highly valued internationally.

  • Industry engagement, where students benefit from the school’s relationships with architectural practices and creative industries, helping them build networks and awareness of real project opportunities.

  • Support beyond graduation, with alumni resources that continue helping you secure roles and shape your professional journey even after leaving university.
