12 Months On Campus Masters Program
This MSc is built for people who want to shape the future of low-carbon and evidence-based architecture. It blends design thinking with technical performance evaluation, preparing you to create buildings that are smarter, healthier and more sustainable.
Curriculum Structure
Semester 1
You develop a strong foundation in sustainable and low-carbon design. Through modules like Low Carbon Building, Environmental Building Performance and Evaluation, and Post-Occupancy Building Performance Evaluation, you learn how buildings behave in the real world — not just on paper.
Semester 2
The focus shifts toward practice and application. With Advanced Sustainable Design and Engineering, you work on design proposals supported by real data, modelling, and simulation — bridging the gap between creative ideas and measurable outcomes.
Final Dissertation / Research Project
You choose a specialised topic you care about and investigate it through research, modelling and performance analysis, often connected to real industry challenges or projects.
Focus Areas
Low-carbon building design, performance evaluation, occupant well-being, environmental simulation, post-occupancy assessment
Learning Outcomes
Design sustainable buildings using evidence-based methods, evaluate building performance confidently, and apply advanced low-carbon strategies in real-world contexts.
Professional Alignment
Developed within the Oxford Brookes School of Architecture and shaped by leading sustainability and building performance research groups.
Reputation
Known internationally for sustainability-focused architecture education, with strong employability in roles across design, consultancy, research, and the wider built-environment sector.
This MSc gives you the chance to learn sustainability the way it is practiced in the real world. Instead of only studying theory, you’ll get to analyse real buildings, test ideas through simulations, and work with performance data to understand how design decisions truly affect people and the environment. You’ll use specialised facilities, collaborate with academics and visiting professionals, and spend a lot of time in studio environments where creativity and technical thinking come together.
As your learning becomes more hands-on, you’ll be surrounded by resources that help you explore and experiment, including:
24/7 architecture studio spaces where you can develop projects, work in teams, and receive design feedback from tutors and consultants.
Digital fabrication facilities such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers and a fully equipped print room to support model-making and prototyping.
Computer labs with industry-standard environmental modelling and simulation software used for building performance evaluation.
The Architectural Technology Laboratory featuring tools like a solar simulator, climatic and vacuum chambers, and a structural test rig for evaluating how materials and building systems respond under different conditions.
Direct exposure to active research through centres such as the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development, allowing students to engage with ongoing projects and cutting-edge low-carbon design developments.
Guest lectures and collaborations with sustainability specialists and building performance consultants, giving you an understanding of how the same methods you learn are applied in practice.
Graduates of this MSc are well-equipped to step straight into roles that shape the future of low-carbon and performance-driven architecture. The programme opens doors to careers such as sustainable design consultant, building performance analyst, sustainability manager within architectural practices, and researcher in low-carbon building systems. Employers value the fact that students graduate not only with design ability, but with evidence-based technical skills and hands-on experience of real building performance.
To support your transition from university into the professional world, Oxford Brookes strengthens your journey with:
A dedicated Careers Service offering one-to-one support, CV and portfolio guidance, interview preparation, and exclusive job and internship opportunities — with free access for three years after graduation.
Strong employability record across the university, demonstrating that Brookes graduates successfully progress into work and further study soon after completing their degree.
An industry-aligned curriculum shaped with input from sustainability consultancies, architectural practices and research specialists, helping students build the exact skills employers seek.
Professional accreditation that adds long-term value to your profile and positions you competitively across the built-environment sector.
Real-world project experience and industry collaborations that allow students to make professional connections before graduation.
Further Academic Progression:
After completing this MSc, students who want to continue their academic journey can progress to a PhD or MRes in areas such as sustainable architecture, building performance, low-carbon design, or environmental engineering — either at Oxford Brookes or at another leading research institution. Many also use this qualification as a foundation for professional chartership pathways in the sustainable built-environment field.
