Reputation & Employability

Edinburgh College of Art is globally recognized for architecture, combining rigorous academic training with professional practice to prepare graduates for contemporary architectural careers

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the MArch programme, you’ll learn architecture by doing it. Most of your time is spent in ESALA design studios, with your own desk and computer, tackling real architectural projects. Field trips and workshops with practicing architects allow you to connect your studio work with real-world sites and professional practice.

Here’s how your practical learning comes together:

  • Work in well-equipped technical workshops, including wood, metal, casting, spray rooms, and carving bays.

  • Access digital fabrication labs with 3D printing, laser cutting, and CAD-CAM tools.

  • Receive guidance from specialist technical staff for model-making, material experiments, and hands-on fabrication.

  • Use the Art & Architecture Library, which offers extensive collections on architectural theory, history, sustainability, and practice.

  • Participate in group critiques, peer learning sessions, and one-on-one tutorials with academic staff.

  • Explore advanced facilities such as VR/AR labs, 3D scanning, high-performance computing, and digital modeling equipment.

  • Take part in field trips to architecturally and historically significant sites to test and develop your design ideas in real contexts.

This combination of studio work, workshops, and field experiences ensures you graduate with practical, research-informed skills ready for professional practice.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MArch are ready to take on professional architecture roles, including architect in private practice, urban designer, sustainable design consultant, or architectural project lead.
