MArch Architecture

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Portsmouth

Program Overview

The MArch Architecture at the University of Portsmouth is a two-year full-time course designed to help you become a confident, fully qualified architect. It suits students who want to sharpen both their creative design abilities and their professional, technical competence — with a strong focus on sustainability, cities, culture and meaningful architectural impact.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Your first year strengthens your core architectural foundations. You’ll explore strategic design thinking, learn how architecture responds to history and culture, and understand how buildings are shaped by materials, structures and environmental performance. Expect a mix of studio design work, critical theory and hands-on technical learning.

Year 2
In the second year you take on more complex projects and develop your own design identity. You’ll work on a major thesis project, combining research with a substantial architectural proposal, while also learning what it takes to operate professionally — including practice management and the realities of running or joining an architectural practice.

Focus areas

Urbanism and sustainability, architectural design studios, construction and structural systems, history and theory, professional practice and project management.

Learning outcomes

Graduate with the ability to produce integrated architectural designs, make informed environmental and structural decisions, manage projects from concept to completion, and operate confidently in professional practice.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The program is accredited by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), giving you the exemption required for RIBA/ARB Part 2 on the route to becoming a registered architect.

Reputation

Portsmouth’s architecture teaching receives strong recognition nationally, with high student satisfaction and consistently positive postgraduate experience ratings — especially for studio teaching quality and employability preparation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Portsmouth, the MArch is built around doing — not just learning. You’ll spend most of your time in professional-style studios and workshops, designing, testing and refining ideas in the same way practising architects do. From model-making to digital design, you’ll have the freedom to experiment and build a portfolio filled with real, meaningful projects that reflect the kind of architect you want to become.

To give you a sense of what that looks like in practice, here are the hands-on learning opportunities built into the course:

  • A dedicated open-plan architecture studio culture, where you’ll work side-by-side with peers, constantly exchanging ideas and developing designs through feedback — just like in an actual architectural practice.

  • Specialist 3D workshops for wood, metal, plastics, concrete and plaster, allowing you to turn concepts into physical models and technical prototypes.

  • Access to digital design labs with professional-grade software for modelling, rendering and visual communication, supporting everything from conceptual visuals to detailed construction proposals.

  • Opportunities to take part in live and community-focused design briefs through the Architecture Project Office, gaining real experience with clients such as councils, heritage organisations and community groups.

  • Interdisciplinary project opportunities with other creative students across design-related fields, helping you develop a broader problem-solving and collaborative mindset.

  • Exhibitions and public showcases where your work may be presented beyond the university — boosting your confidence and helping you graduate with a portfolio that stands out to employers.

These experiences ensure you’re not only learning how buildings should look — you’re learning how they’re designed, tested, communicated and delivered in the real world.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MArch at Portsmouth come out ready to work as confident, capable architects with a strong blend of creative and technical skills. Many move straight into architectural practice in the UK or internationally, while others find their niche in areas such as sustainability, conservation or large-scale urban development. Popular career paths include Architect, Architectural Designer, Urban Designer, and Heritage or Conservation Specialist.

To help you get there, Portsmouth builds professional success directly into the student journey:

  • You get ongoing support from the Careers and Employability Service for up to five years after you graduate, including help with CVs, portfolio development, job applications and interview preparation.

  • The Architecture Project Office connects students with live clients and external organisations, giving you real industry experience even before graduating.

  • The MArch gives you the ARB/RIBA Part 2 accreditation, a crucial step toward becoming a registered architect — something employers look for internationally.

  • The School of Architecture has a strong track record of graduates securing roles in respected firms across the UK and overseas, especially in sustainable design, commercial and residential development, heritage conservation and regeneration projects.

Further Academic Progression

After completing the MArch, students typically continue their professional journey by progressing toward the Part 3 qualification, which leads to full registered architect status. Others choose to take a more research-focused path by pursuing a PhD or MPhil in areas such as sustainability, digital fabrication, housing, conservation or urban design.
