MA Feature Film Development

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Birmingham City University

Program Overview

The MA Feature Film Development at Birmingham City University (BCU) prepares ambitious filmmakers and creatives to take a feature-film concept all the way through development and pre-production — ready to pitch to investors. It’s designed for people passionate about storytelling, production design, pre-visualisation, or film development roles, giving you the skills to transform ideas into professional-ready film projects.

Curriculum Structure
Over the course of the MA, you’ll build hands-on experience creating a full feature film story and a pre-visualisation reel with your peers — simulating how big-budget films are developed before they’re green-lit. You’ll engage in story workshops to break down screenplays, develop character arcs, structure scenes, and iteratively design performance and action staging — using industry-standard software like Maya, ZBrush, Unreal Engine, Blender and Adobe Creative Cloud.
As part of this collaborative process, you’ll work within a pre-production team, learn milestone scheduling, project management, and build a “portfolio of practice” that demonstrates your specialism and teamwork to future employers.

Focus areas
Pre-production development, storytelling & structure, pre-visualisation and animatics, feature-film development pipelines, production planning & scheduling, team collaboration, software-based content creation, and pitching projects for financing.

Learning outcomes
You will gain the ability to translate narrative ideas and screenplays into fully developed film proposals, create professional-quality pre-visualisation reels, understand and manage the entire pre-production process for a feature film, and build a strong multidisciplinary portfolio — positioning you to work effectively in real-world film production environments.

Professional alignment (accreditation)
This MA is part of BCU’s “Film Futures” suite, developed in close collaboration with industry professionals to meet current demand for skilled film-industry graduates who can operate internationally.

Reputation (employability rankings)
BCU emphasizes employability: students work with industry-standard tools, produce real-world relevant work, and graduate with a “portfolio of practice” that reflects actual film-production practices. This focus — combined with connections to international film industry networks — helps position graduates for employment in film development, production houses, and related roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll leave this master’s not just with theory — but with real-world skills and experience. From day one, you’ll work with tools and software used by major film studios, collaborate in teams to build full feature-film stories, and create a “pre-visualisation reel” — an animatic that captures the narrative, action and performance staging of a film before shooting even begins. The course is studio-based, taught by industry professionals, and structured around teamwork, deadlines, and the same tight production pipelines you’d find in a real film project.

Here’s how that experiential learning breaks down for you:

  • You’ll work as part of a pre-production team to produce a full feature-film story plus a pre-visualisation reel — giving you tangible evidence of your skills and a strong portfolio item.

  • The course includes story workshops, where you’ll extract and develop narrative structure, plan character arcs and staging — building a deep understanding of storytelling fundamentals in film.

  • You’ll learn to use industry-standard software common in major studios: for example, licences are provided for Autodesk Maya, Maxon ZBrush, Unreal Engine, Blender, Adobe Substance Painter & Designer, and you also get access to Adobe Creative Cloud on your own devices.

  • You’ll have access to a specialist room with dedicated PCs and shared studios, plus open-access work spaces that support team-based projects and creative collaboration.

  • If you choose the Professional Placement option, you get the chance to spend roughly 20 weeks working with an external employer, helping build industry-ready skills and enhancing your employability.

  • Throughout your studies, the assignments are designed to reflect real-world pre-production practices — not exams — helping you behave and work like a professional from day one.

  • As part of your “Major Project” (in semester three), all MA students collaborate in a live-studio environment, producing a full film story and pre-visualisation. In many cases this leads to a live pitch — sometimes even to international studios, producers, or distributors.

Given all of this, studying MA Feature Film Development at BCU isn’t just about classroom learning — it’s about working like you’re already in the film industry, using the same tools, workflows, and collaborative processes professionals use.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from MA Feature Film Development often move directly into creative and production-side roles such as story artist, pre-visualisation artist, film producer, or development executive — giving you a strong pathway into the film and entertainment industry. With a practical, industry-facing portfolio by graduation, you’ll be in a good position to work for studios, production companies, or as a freelance creative.

Future Progression & Opportunities:

  • Career Services & Support: BCU’s Careers Service helps you refine your CV, cover letters, application forms, and portfolios; provides advice on self-employment and entrepreneurship; and supports preparation for interviews and assessment centres, which helps graduates transition effectively into the job market. Practical Experience & Portfolio: Throughout the course, you’ll build a “portfolio of practice” by producing a full feature-film story and pre-visualisation reel with a team — mirroring real-world studio pipelines. That portfolio demonstrates your professional skills to potential employers.

  • Industry Exposure & Placement Option: There is an optional 20-week professional placement after taught modules, giving you real industry experience, professional contacts, and a competitive edge. BCU’s network of local, regional and national employers helps you access placement opportunities.

  • Industry-Standard Tools & Studios: You’ll learn using industry-standard software (e.g. for pre-visualisation, 2D/3D art, animation) and have access to dedicated studios and workspaces — giving you hands-on skills that match what employers look for in film production and pre-production roles.

  • Global & Industry-Focused Curriculum: The course is part of BCU’s “Film Futures” suite, which was developed in collaboration with film-industry professionals to reflect real demand in the international film sector — helping ensure your qualification has international relevance.

Example Roles Graduates Might Get:

  • Story Artist / Pre-visualisation Artist (on feature films or animated projects)

  • Film Producer or Development Executive (helping shape and pitch film projects)

  • Screenwriter / Script Developer (working on narrative development)

  • Production Designer / Concept Artist / Pre-production Coordinator

Long-Term Value & Accreditation:
The degree is taught by industry professionals with real-world experience; there are no traditional exams — instead, coursework mirrors professional filmmaking practice, so your MA is more like a professional qualification than an academic exercise.  Because it’s an internationally recognized MA from a UK university and part of a course suite designed for global industry standards, it should retain value whether you work locally or internationally.

Further Academic Progression:
You could build on this MA by pursuing a research-focused master’s (or PhD) in film/theatre studies, media or animation; or specialise via further qualifications in film production, digital media, animation technology, or film business/marketing. BCU’s own postgraduate pathways (or those at other universities) in media, film business, or digital production would complement the practical skills you gain here and open doors to higher-level creative leadership, research or academic roles.
