MA Film Distribution and Marketing

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Birmingham City University

Program Overview

The MA Film Distribution and Marketing at BCU is a one‑year (or 18‑month with placement) full‑time Master’s designed to train you to succeed behind the scenes in film — shaping how films are financed, marketed, released and reach audiences worldwide. If you’re passionate about cinema but more drawn to the business, strategy, and distribution side than filmmaking itself, this course gives you practical, industry‑focused skills to enter film distribution, sales, marketing and festival circuits.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1 (MA core year):
You’ll study core modules including Film Audiences and the Distribution Landscape, where you explore how films reach and engage audiences across different markets — from cinemas to streaming and festivals. The module The Film Value Chain gives you an in‑depth view of the full lifecycle of a film — from development, financing, production to distribution and exhibition — helping you understand how each stage connects in real industry workflows. Your learning culminates in the Major Project, a substantial project where you design a real distribution and marketing strategy for a film (or portfolio), applying everything you’ve learned in a live‑project style setup.

Alongside the core, you choose from optional modules — for example Film Marketing, Planning and Deployment (for hands‑on marketing campaign work), Film Festivals, Marketing and PR (learning how film festivals, PR and publicity play into distribution), Digital Production in Practice (useful if you’re interested in digital & multi‑platform distribution), and Collaborative Practice (working in teams, simulating real industry collaboration).

Focus areas: Film distribution strategies, audience analysis & market understanding, film value chain (development to exhibition), marketing campaign design, film festival PR & distribution, digital and multi‑platform distribution, industry business models, and practical industry‑style projects/placements.

Learning outcomes: You’ll gain strategic and practical skills to design, manage and execute film distribution and marketing campaigns; understand how the film business works end‑to‑end (financing, production, distribution, exhibition); be ready to work with distributors, sales agents, production companies or even run your own distribution/marketing initiatives; and be equipped to navigate traditional and digital film markets, festival circuits, and emerging global entertainment business models.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The course was developed in collaboration with film industry professionals and is taught by staff with extensive real‑world experience — meaning your learning is directly relevant to current industry practices.

Reputation (employability & outcomes): Graduates from this programme have gone on to work with well‑known distribution and sales companies (in UK and internationally) such as Hanway Films, Kaleidoscope Films, GFM Films, Red Arrow Entertainment — in roles like Sales & Distribution Co‑ordinator, Acquisitions, Project Manager or Marketing roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you join BCU’s MA Film Distribution and Marketing, you’ll be working not just in classrooms, but actively shaping real film projects: from strategising distribution and marketing, to working with industry companies, to practical placements. The programme integrates hands‑on industry exposure, real-world projects, and access to modern campus facilities that support film/media work.

Here’s what your experiential learning will involve at BCU:

  • Work on real film projects with full life‑cycle awareness: During the course you’ll work on real film projects — from relatively low‑budget or art‑house to more commercially ambitious films — developing strategies for their financing, distribution, and marketing.

  • Professional placements / internships option: There is an optional “Professional Placement” route: after taught modules you can spend ~20 weeks working with an employer in the film/marketing/distribution industry — a great way to get direct professional experience before graduation.

  • Industry‑experienced teaching team & mentoring: The course is taught by professionals currently active in the film industry (including producers and distribution experts). Under their guidance you’ll learn to craft realistic marketing, distribution, financing and pitching strategies.

  • Learning modern digital & distribution‑channel strategies: The programme examines traditional and new business models, including digital communication channels and monetisation across platforms — reflecting today’s evolving film-market environment.

  • Practical modules on marketing, planning, deployment, distribution & audience research: Core and optional modules include things like “Film Audiences and the Distribution Landscape”, “The Film Value Chain”, “Film Marketing, Planning and Deployment”, “Film Festivals, Marketing and PR”, giving hands‑on practice in real tasks rather than just theory.

  • Access to campus resources, digital tools and research support: As part of your studies, you’ll use university‑provided computers and shared computer rooms; you’ll also be able to access specialist software (for research and marketing analysis) such as SPSS and NVivo.

  • Field trips & exposure to film‑industry events: The course fees cover essential field trips and associated travel costs — which may include industry visits or film‑festival attendance.

  • Strong career orientation with real outcomes: Previous graduates have secured roles in distribution, sales and marketing with established companies across the UK and Europe. The programme is designed for “entrepreneurial producers, marketers and distribution experts,” making it career‑ready from Day 1.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from BCU’s MA Film Distribution and Marketing positions you for a variety of creative‑business roles in film and media — from sales and distribution to marketing and film financing. Many alumni begin as distribution coordinators or sales‑acquisitions staff, while others move into production companies or independent film sales, giving them a foothold in the global film business. Because of the course’s industry alignment and practical training, you’re not just learning theory — you’re building actual hands‑on skills and connections that help you launch a career.

Typical roles you could pursue soon after finishing include:

  • International Sales & Distribution Coordinator / Acquisitions Coordinator

  • Marketing and Distribution Manager for film sales agents or distributors

  • Project Manager for film marketing, release planning or film launches

  • Business‑development or sales roles at production/distribution companies

✅ Why BCU gives you a real shot at success

  • Industry‑shaped curriculum & real‑world practice: The course is “designed with industry” to reflect the growing demand for entrepreneurial producers, marketers and distribution specialists. It doesn’t just teach theory — you work on real projects, design marketing/distribution campaigns, pitch films, plan financing, and simulate the full film lifecycle from development to distribution.

  • Placement option for professional experience: You have the option for an 18‑month path that includes a professional placement (about 20 weeks) with real companies — which many past students have used to get internships or entry-level jobs with respected distributors or sales agents.

  • Access to networks and major industry players: Graduates from this programme have gone on to work with companies such as Hanway Films, Kaleidoscope Films, GFM Films, Red Arrow Entertainment — and also had internships or placements at big‑name companies such as FilmNation Entertainment and Sony Pictures Classics.

  • Wide range of skills — business, marketing, strategy & digital distribution: The curriculum covers film financing, emerging business models, digital communication, marketing, distribution, and cross‑platform monetization — giving you a versatile toolkit that is relevant whether you aim to work in traditional cinema distribution, streaming, sales, or new media ventures.

  • Real graduate success stories: Some graduates have secured full‑time roles — for instance, as Executive Assistant at Hanway Films, Sales & Acquisitions Assistants at Kaleidoscope Films or other distributors, and placements at major marketing agencies or film sales companies.

Further Academic Progression:
If after the MA you want to deepen your film‑business acumen, you could look for more specialised postgraduate opportunities — like a higher degree combining film business, media management or film production/finance. Alternatively, you could pair this with roles that layer creative production or content creation skills (for example via short courses in film production, media business, or even an MBA‑type qualification in media management) to expand into producing, studio management, or content‑distribution leadership roles.
