MA Producing Film and Television

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Bournemouth University

Program Overview

MA Producing Film & Television helps you learn how to shape ideas into real film or TV projects — from early development, through planning, funding, collaboration and production — so you graduate ready to lead the production process. It’s ideal for someone who wants to work behind the camera, manage productions, or even launch their own film or TV company.

Curriculum structure
The programme is full‑time and lasts one year. In that time you will be immersed in a production‑office style environment that reflects real industry conditions. You’ll study core units that cover producing roles and responsibilities, funding and collaboration practices, and how to make projects both culturally significant and commercially viable.

In practice, you’ll work through modules like Narrative Constructions, where you explore story, social and cultural context to build projects with meaningful content — giving you the critical awareness to develop ideas responsibly.
Then you move into hands‑on producing projects: in the Master’s Production Project you might plan a film, write a business plan for a feature, or produce a TV‑series proposal or pilot — so you graduate with a strong, industry‑ready portfolio.

Focus areas: producing projects for film and television; project development; production management; funding, budgeting and scheduling; collaboration across creative departments; turning creative ideas into viable media productions.

Learning outcomes: you will gain the skills to develop, plan and manage film/TV productions; coordinate creative teams; handle practical and financial aspects of media projects; create production‑ready proposals or pilot projects; and be prepared for professional roles in production or even to launch your own independent production initiatives.

Professional alignment (accreditation): This MA is accredited by the International Moving Image Society (IMIS), a recognised body for practice‑based media courses — which underlines that the programme meets professional standards for industry preparation.

Reputation (employability strength): Graduates from this course go on to work in production roles across film and television, with many entering established companies or launching independent productions. The course’s mix of practical training, professional‑standard facilities and industry‑focused curriculum gives strong employability potential

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From the get‑go at BU, you’ll be working in a setup that mirrors real film/TV production houses — not just studying theory, but actively planning, organising and managing productions, collaborating with peers across disciplines, and using professional‑level facilities, all under the guidance of industry‑experienced staff. As a producing student, you’ll learn to bring creative ideas to life in a fully supported production environment — giving you the confidence, experience, and network you need before stepping into the industry.

Here’s how your experiential learning is structured:

  • You’ll work in a simulated production‑office environment — the course is designed so that your “home base” reflects how a real production company operates.

  • You’ll have access to top‑tier production facilities on campus: at the Poole Gateway Building you’ll find 4 K multi‑camera TV studios, a film studio, a sound‑stage, plus all the infrastructure to support film and television production. Throughout the year you’ll collaborate with other postgraduate students — filmmakers, writers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers — to develop, plan, and produce real projects, from pre‑production through to post‑production.

  • Your final project is your choice: you might produce a film, create a TV‑series proposal and pilot, or write a feature‑film business plan — giving you practical experience and a tangible “calling card” for industry.

  • You’ll be taught and supported by a mix of senior academics, professional practitioners, technical demonstrators, research students, and industry guest‑lecturers — giving you insight into real-world production practices, networking opportunities, and mentorship from people working in the field.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of MA Producing Film & Television launch into the media industry ready for roles such as Producer, Production Manager, Development Executive or — for the entrepreneurial — independent Production Company founder. With BU’s hands‑on, industry‑facing training, many alumni begin their careers working for established production companies or start their own creative ventures, positioning themselves for steady career growth.

Why this degree gives you real, long‑term career value:

  • University support & services for employment: BU’s Department of Media Production offers a “production‑office” environment in its studios and gives students real experience working as producers — mirroring industry practice.

  • Strong industry‑connections and collaborative experience: You will produce projects working alongside students in scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, and sound — similar to a real production house. Many graduates go on to careers at cutting‑edge production companies or start independent productions.

  • Preparation for multiple types of roles: Career paths include roles such as Producer, Production Manager, Development Executive, or independent film/TV Producer — giving flexibility depending on what aspects of production you like.

  • Accreditation & long-term credibility: The course is accredited by the International Moving Image Society (IMIS), signalling to employers that your training is industry‑standard and internationally recognised. Tangible graduate outcomes and industry‑relevant skills: You’ll graduate with practical production experience, a strong industry‑relevant skill set (funding, project management, communication, collaboration), and a portfolio of real projects — which helps you stand out when applying for jobs.

Further Academic Progression:
If you wish to deepen your knowledge or pivot toward more theoretical, research-based or academic careers (for instance media studies, industry analysis, or teaching), you could consider a research‑based Master’s or PhD after this MA. With BU’s strong media production department and its academic resources, the MA can serve as a springboard for advanced postgraduate study or research work in film & television production, media industries, and related fields.
