MDes in Interior Design

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

The Glasgow School of Art

Program Overview

The MDes Interior Design at Glasgow School of Art is designed for curious, independent-minded creatives who want to explore interiors beyond just decoration—thinking critically about why spaces are made and how they shape human experience. The programme blends hands-on design, research, and experimentation, helping you develop bold, innovative solutions for real-world environments.

Curriculum Structure

Stage 1 (Year 1): You’ll start by exploring Interior Design 1: Interface, Context & Cooperation, diving into the history, theory, and cultural context of interiors. Alongside this, Core Research Methods for Design will guide you in building strong research skills, setting the foundation for more complex projects later.

Stage 2 (Year 2): This stage deepens your understanding through Interior Design 2: Critical Surveying, Scope & Intention, where you refine your own design voice and begin defining personal project directions. You’ll also take a PGT elective, which could be anything from craft-focused work to digital experimentation, encouraging cross-disciplinary thinking.

Stage 3 (Year 3): Your final year centres on a Research Project, where you merge practice with scholarship. You’ll develop and execute your own brief, producing a portfolio-quality project that reflects your personal vision while demonstrating advanced research and design skills.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At GSA, the MDes Interior Design programme isn’t just about sitting in lectures — it’s about doing, making, and exploring. From day one, you’ll be working in studio spaces where ideas come to life: testing, prototyping, and refining designs with the guidance of expert tutors. You’ll mix hands-on craft with cutting-edge digital tools, learning to combine research, theory, and practice in ways that push your work further. Collaboration is built into the programme, so you’ll constantly engage with peers, guest tutors, and visiting professionals, preparing you for the realities of the design world.

Here’s how that hands-on learning works in practice:

  • Advanced 3D workshops – Explore metalwork, woodwork, plastics, casting, laser cutting, and 3D printing to bring your ideas to life.

  • Digital & media tools – Use VR, digital fabrication, coding, and media production studios to experiment with contemporary design methods.

  • Collaborative studio projects – Work alongside peers and visiting tutors on group projects, crits, and speculative research initiatives.

  • Research-led design – Integrate theory into your projects through guided research methods, helping your designs become thoughtful and informed.

  • Critical tech workshops – Engage with emerging tools like AI-driven design to explore new creative possibilities.

  • Specialist technical support – Access dedicated staff and resources for model-making, prototyping, and material experimentation.

  • Library & resource access – GSA’s library supports your work with tailored design and research materials.

  • Open-plan studios – Work in creative, collaborative spaces that encourage idea-sharing, experimentation, and reflection.
