MA Interior Architecture and Design

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of East London

Program Overview

The MA Interior Architecture & Design at UEL is perfect for imaginative designers who want to shape meaningful, culturally aware spaces and push their creative practice to a more professional, research-driven level. Whether you come from an interiors, architecture, or design background, the course gives you the chance to experiment, question, and design with purpose while developing a strong portfolio rooted in real-world thinking and creative exploration.

Curriculum Structure

Advanced Interior Design 1

You’ll begin by taking on ambitious design challenges that encourage you to think across different scales — from large, conceptual spatial interventions to detailed interior elements. This module helps you sharpen your creative approach through sketching, modelling, digital tools, and iterative design development.

Advanced Interior Design 2

As you move deeper into your practice, this module helps you refine, test, and push your design ideas further. You’ll work through multiple iterations, strengthen your ability to communicate design concepts, and build confidence in presenting your ideas within a professional design process.

Interior Design Theory 1 & 2

These modules invite you to slow down and think critically about the role of interiors in society. Through readings, case studies, and contextual studies, you’ll explore how cultural, political, and social factors shape the spaces we inhabit — and how your own design work can respond to them thoughtfully.

Professional Practice (Mental Wealth)

Here, you’ll learn what it takes to thrive as a creative professional. From understanding project workflows to collaboration, communication, and business awareness, this module prepares you for the realities of working in interior architecture and the broader design industry.

Interior Design Thesis

Your year culminates in a major design-led research project where you define your own brief and channel everything you’ve learned into a polished, well-developed proposal. This is your opportunity to create something deeply personal, ambitious, and portfolio-ready — a true reflection of your creative direction.

Focus areas: “interior architecture, design research, cultural & political context, spatial interventions, professional design practice”

Learning outcomes: “develop strong conceptual and design-making skills, critically engage with theory, execute a research-led design thesis, and understand professional practice in interior architecture”

Professional alignment (accreditation): While not tied to a specific accreditation body, the course is grounded in real design practice — using live scenarios, studio-based work, and industry-informed teaching to prepare you for careers in interiors, architecture, and related creative sectors.

Reputation (employability rankings): UEL highlights strong industry links within London’s creative scene, and the School’s collaborations and research connections (including organisations like Arup and Museum of London) help students access a wider professional network.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What students love most about UEL’s MA Interior Architecture & Design is how quickly they move from ideas on paper to real, tangible work. You won’t just discuss design concepts — you’ll build, test, sketch, model, and revisit them in a studio environment that feels creative, energetic, and very close to what you’d experience in a professional design practice. And because the course blends hands-on making with advanced digital tools, you’re constantly developing the kind of practical confidence employers really notice.

Here’s how you’ll learn, step by step:

  • Amazing Making & Fabrication Facilities: You’ll spend time in the AVA building and DFUEL digital fabrication lab, where you can experiment with everything from traditional wood and metal work to ceramics, mould-making, bookbinding, and printmaking.

  • Advanced Digital Tools: DFUEL also gives you access to 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners and even a robotic arm — perfect for turning ambitious concepts into real prototypes.

  • Design Software & Computer Suites: You’ll have access to fully equipped computer labs with the digital tools needed for modelling, visualisation, and presentation.

  • Studio-Based Learning: Most of your learning happens in small studio groups. It’s collaborative, supportive, and gives you plenty of time with tutors to refine your design voice.

  • Real Design Scenarios: Many of your projects are based on real-world briefs — from retail spaces to exhibitions — so you build a portfolio that shows employers you can handle genuine industry challenges.

  • Field Visits Across London: You’ll regularly head out to galleries, museums, and architectural landmarks, using London as your extended classroom for inspiration and research.

  • Library & Research Support: When you need quiet focus, you can use UEL’s 24/7 Docklands Library, which has dedicated spaces and a huge range of digital and print resources.

  • Personal Academic Support: You get a personal tutor who stays with you throughout the course — someone who helps you build confidence, track your progress, and shape your thesis project.
