This course is designed to help you explore and enhance your abilities and interests in various forms of narrative and sequential illustration. With the guidance and support of experienced instructors and accomplished practitioners in the field, you will create children's books, graphic novels, and other illustrated texts using our top-notch facilities.
This program emphasizes hands-on learning and provides students with excellent opportunities to publish their work in these areas. Our faculty members are working illustrators with diverse backgrounds, providing valuable insights into all aspects of the publishing industry. We also host guest lectures and workshops with publishers, writers, editors, designers, and art directors, who will offer valuable advice and expertise on breaking into the competitive world of publishing, narratives, and children's books.
As part of their blended learning approach, students will have access to our exceptional printmaking rooms, which offer a range of options such as silk screen, lithography, mono print, wood and lino cutting, etching, and dry point. Our state-of-the-art reprographic department is available where possible, allowing students to produce high-quality dummy books and sample illustrations. Additionally, their university printing department can print students' dummy books and deliver them to a specific address, enabling them to pitch their final major projects where appropriate.
They also provide practical instruction in bookbinding, helping students to produce illustrated material to the highest presentation standards. Overall, this is a practical and research-based course that provides students with excellent opportunities to develop their skills and interests in various forms of narrative and sequential illustration, with the goal of achieving success in the publishing industry.
They acknowledge and consider equivalent qualifications obtained from recognized institutions abroad. Their typical requirement is a good 2:2 or higher degree or a comparable qualification in a relevant field. We also assess applicants with relevant alternative qualifications.
Proficiency in the English language is a prerequisite for enrollment in their institution. The IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component) is commonly accepted as evidence of English language proficiency
This program will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career in illustrating children's books, stories, and graphic novels. Opportunities to meet with agents, publishers, writers, and practicing illustrators will be available. Freelance work is the most common form of employment for illustrators in this field, and first-hand experience will be shared on how to establish yourself in this area.
Advice will be given on how to approach publishing houses, including presenting a dummy book and portfolio at the world's largest children's book fair in Bologna, Italy, and the Frankfurt book fair in Germany. Additionally, visits will be made to the London Bookfair, which is becoming increasingly important in the publishing calendar. Teaching and studio-based work are potential alternative careers.
