MSc Business and Management

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Plymouth

Program Overview

This master’s is designed to help you step confidently into the world of business, even if your first degree wasn’t in a business field. It gives you the practical skills, strategic mindset, and leadership confidence that modern organisations look for — all wrapped into a flexible, supportive learning experience.

Curriculum structure

Year 1 (Full-time, September start)

You’ll begin with two core modules that build your professional foundation. Managing People and Finance helps you understand how organisations work from the inside — from leadership styles and team behaviour to the financial knowledge managers rely on. Alongside that, Marketing and Strategy shows you how companies position themselves, make strategic choices, and compete in crowded markets.

As you move into the second semester, you’ll take Operations and Project Management, where you learn how businesses run day-to-day — planning, quality management, and project leadership. You’ll also choose an elective that lets you personalise your degree, whether that’s international finance, procurement, social media, or global strategy. At the same time, you’ll begin preparing for your Capstone Project with dedicated research-methods support.

Your final summer is dedicated to your Capstone Project. This is where everything comes together: you’ll work closely with an academic supervisor to explore a real business challenge, carry out consultancy-style analysis, or dive deeper into a topic you’re passionate about.

(If you start in January, you complete the same modules — just in a different order.)

Focus areas

Business strategy, people and finance management, marketing, operations and project management, plus optional specialisations such as international business, finance, procurement, social media, or global supply chains.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme, you’ll be able to analyse business problems with confidence, lead teams effectively, understand financial decisions, manage operations or projects, and deliver a full, research-driven business project that showcases your expertise.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The programme is accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE), giving your qualification global credibility.

Reputation (employability & outcomes)

Graduates from this MSc have progressed into management-level roles with organisations such as Ernst & Young GmbH, DHL International, Deloitte, HP Enterprise Services, and other international employers — a strong sign of the programme’s industry relevance and employability strength.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Plymouth Business School, learning feels real from day one. Instead of just reading about how organisations work, you’ll be using the same tools, data and environments that professionals rely on in industry. Whether you’re analysing live market trends, working with your classmates on strategic challenges, or developing your own business ideas, the programme is built to help you grow through hands-on experience. You’ll also be supported by modern facilities, specialist spaces and a community that encourages you to test ideas and build confidence as a future manager.

Here’s how this practical learning experience comes to life on the MSc Business and Management:

  • Bloomberg Interactive Suite — You’ll get access to live financial markets, company data and analytics used by global businesses. It’s a powerful way to strengthen your decision-making skills and become familiar with industry-standard tools.

  • The Cube (entrepreneurship hub) — A dedicated space where you can explore business ideas, get guidance on start-ups, and meet people who share your entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Group projects, case studies and applied classroom tasks — Many of your core modules use real business scenarios to help you practise solving problems, working in teams and applying models to genuine organisational challenges.

  • Capstone Project — Guided by an academic supervisor, you’ll dive into a research or consultancy-style project that showcases your skills and helps you build something meaningful for your future career.

  • Careers support and employer engagement — You’ll have access to workshops, employer events and personalised advice from the university’s Careers Service — not just during your studies, but for up to three years after graduation.

It’s a programme that gives you options: whether you want to climb within a company, switch industries, or build an international career, you’ll graduate with the skills to do it.

And the University of Plymouth backs you with strong support every step of the way:
