The MSc Business & Heritage Management at the University of Southampton is designed for anyone who loves history, culture, and heritage but also wants to master the business side of things. You’ll gain the skills to manage cultural and historic assets confidently, learning how to combine business strategy with heritage management in a way that makes a real-world impact.


Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Taught + Dissertation Stage)
Your first nine months are all about building a strong foundation. You’ll dive into Corporate Finance, Principles of Risk Management, and Project Management – Processes, giving you the know-how to make smart business decisions, handle risk, and run projects efficiently. At the same time, heritage-focused modules like Global Cultural Heritage and Cultural Heritage within Environmental Impact Assessment will deepen your understanding of managing cultural assets in a global context. The final three months focus on your Archaeology Dissertation, where you get to research a topic you’re passionate about, guided by expert supervisors.

  • Digital Humanities Hub: Explore virtual reality, 3D scanning and printing, motion capture, and immersive 360-degree spaces to experiment with heritage objects and environments. 

  • Archaeology Labs: Work hands-on with artefacts, conduct site modelling, and engage in digital reconstruction projects. 

  • Coastal & Inland Waters Heritage Science Facility (CIW): Gain experience with drones, ROVs, LiDAR, photogrammetry, and GIS software like ArcGIS Pro, giving you the skills to document and analyze both terrestrial and maritime heritage. 

  • Fieldwork & Surveys: Participate in practical surveys and fieldwork, using modern tools to map, measure, and digitally capture heritage sites. 

  • Research-led Dissertation: Conduct your own original research, supported by expert supervisors, giving you a real taste of working in the heritage sector. 

  • Group & Individual Projects: Collaborate with peers on projects, create reports, presentations, and business plans, while also developing independent research and problem-solving skills.
