University of Stirling

Program Overview

The MSc Finance at the University of Stirling is a dynamic one‑year postgraduate degree designed to give you a strong foundation in modern financial theory while equipping you with hands‑on experience in financial markets and decision‑making. You’ll explore how markets react to real‑world events and learn practical skills in areas like investment portfolio management, preparing you for a range of roles across finance and banking.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Taught Modules & Professional Skills Development)
In your first semester, you’ll build core financial expertise with modules such as Financial Reporting, where you learn to interpret financial statements; Corporate Finance, focusing on key decisions firms make about capital and valuation; and Quantitative Methods in Finance, which gives you essential statistical and analytical skills used throughout the industry. You’ll also study Economics for Banking and Finance to understand market behaviour and macroeconomic influences on financial systems.

In the second semester, your studies become more specialised with modules such as Derivatives, where you explore futures, options, and risk instruments; Investments and Portfolio Management, to understand strategies behind successful portfolios; and options like International Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions, or Behavioural Finance to deepen your insight into global financial challenges. Alongside these, you’ll develop professional skills through Stirling’s Flying Start Leadership Programme, designed to sharpen communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Dissertation (Final Stage)
After completing the taught modules, you’ll undertake a supervised dissertation where you apply what you’ve learned to a real-world financial research question or case study. This is a great way to showcase your expertise to future employers and prepare for professional qualifications such as the CFA.
