MSc International Business

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Plymouth

Program Overview

The MSc International Business is designed to give you a real edge in today’s global marketplace. It’s perfect for anyone looking to understand how companies operate across borders, build strategies for international growth, and develop practical skills that employers really value. Whether your background is in business or something completely different, this program helps you confidently step into global business roles.

Curriculum structure
During your year of study, you’ll dive into the key concepts that shape international business. Modules like Theories and Practices of International Business (STO7001) give you a solid foundation, while International Business Strategy for Competitive Advantage (STO7003) shows you how firms succeed in the global arena. Current Issues in International Business (STO7002) keeps you up-to-date on the latest challenges and trends, and you’ll put it all together in a hands-on Capstone Project (PBS7000J).

You’ll also have the freedom to pick an elective that matches your interests — for example, Leading, Developing and Managing People (HRL7005) for a focus on global leadership, or International Trade and Data Management (MAR7002) and Marketing and Strategy (MKT7001) if you’re drawn to international trade or marketing. If you start in September, there’s an option to replace the dissertation with a 36-week placement, giving you real-world experience and helping you build a strong professional network.

Focus areas: “International business strategy, global markets, cross-cultural management, leadership and people development, international trade and marketing, hands-on business experience.”

Learning outcomes: “You’ll gain the ability to analyse global business environments, craft strategies for international competition, manage cross-cultural and organisational challenges, and apply your learning through a capstone project or a real-world placement.”

Professional alignment (accreditation): Delivered by Plymouth Business School, which is accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE).

Reputation (employability rankings): Graduates go on to work for global companies like Vodafone and Lloyds Bank. The program is known for producing “business-ready” graduates with strong career prospects.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The MSc International Business at Plymouth isn’t just about sitting in lectures — it’s about doing business in real life. You’ll get hands-on experience through live projects, group work, and simulations that mirror what companies face every day. If you choose the optional placement, you’ll spend up to 36 weeks working with a real company, building your professional network and gaining experience that makes your CV stand out. On top of that, you’ll have access to specialist tools and facilities that help you learn the same way professionals do.

Here’s how you’ll get practical experience throughout the programme:

  • Optional 36‑week Work Placement: Gain real-world experience with a company instead of a traditional dissertation, develop your skills on the job, and make valuable professional connections.

  • Live Projects & Business Simulations: Apply theory to practice through real business scenarios, case studies, and interactive exercises that show how global companies operate.

  • Specialist Facilities & Tools: Use the Bloomberg Interactive Suite to explore live financial data and market trends, giving you practical insight into international business and finance.
