MSc Artificial Intelligence for Media

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Bournemouth University

Program Overview

The MSc Artificial Intelligence for Media at BU is a 1-year full-time programme (with optional placement during the Masters Project) for graduates from technical, creative, or media backgrounds. It offers hands-on training in machine learning, media data analytics, software tools (like Python, PyTorch), and production technologies (e.g. motion capture, animation, green-screen), for roles in media production and AI.

Curriculum Structure:
Students learn core units in Media Data Analytics, Machine Learning for Media, and Software Engineering for Media Production. These give them skills in analysing image/video/audio data, building models with ML techniques, and using production pipelines/software tools used in media (like Houdini, Maya, etc.).

They also learn through creative and technical modules involving motion capture, animation, green screen work, and media-software workflows, learning teamwork, technical problem solving and integrating AI into visual media projects. In the Master's Project, students apply their AI/media skills to a significant individual or collaborative media-oriented project, often with real or simulated industry briefs, building a portfolio piece.

Focus areas
“Machine Learning; Media Data Analytics; Motion Capture & Animation; Green-Screen & Visual FX; Software Tools (Python, PyTorch); Project Work”

Learning outcomes
“Analyse and process media data; build and deploy machine learning models in media contexts; create media assets with animation/motion capture; understand industry tools and workflows; deliver a portfolio project”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Strong industry exposure via NCCA, plus networking with major media companies (Disney, Pixar, etc.); facilities align with media production standards.

Reputation (employability rankings):
NCCA is ranked UK’s top animation school, 3rd in Europe and 4th globally (Animation Career Review 2024), which enhances the course’s profile to media employers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)
