The MSc in Digital Forensics provides specialist training in investigating cyber incidents, analysing digital evidence and understanding forensic processes used in law enforcement and corporate security. It suits students with backgrounds in computing, cybersecurity or related fields who want careers in digital investigations, incident response or forensic analysis.
Curriculum Structure (Full-time, 1 Year)
Year of Study
Students begin with Foundations of Digital Forensics, where they learn how digital evidence is preserved, secured and examined within legal and ethical frameworks. They continue with Artefact Analysis in Digital Forensics, gaining hands-on experience in extracting, recovering and interpreting files, metadata and forensic artefacts from digital devices. The module Enterprise-focused Digital Forensics trains students to investigate incidents within organisational environments, including network forensics, log analysis and handling volatile data. The year concludes with Research & Development in Digital Forensics, leading into an individual research project that applies forensic tools and analytical methods to a real or simulated investigation.
Focus areas: “Digital evidence recovery, device and network forensics, artefact analysis, incident response, forensic tools and methodologies”
Learning outcomes: “Secure and preserve digital evidence; analyse data from devices and networks; perform enterprise-level forensic investigations; interpret forensic artefacts; complete a specialised digital-forensics research project.”
Professional alignment (accreditation): Delivered within a recognised cyber-technology school and aligned with professional forensic and cybersecurity practices.
Reputation (employability rankings): The university has strong standing in cybersecurity and digital forensics education, with graduates progressing into roles in law enforcement, corporate forensics, cybersecurity, and incident-response teams.
This programme focuses on applying advanced computing principles through practical project work in the University's specialist facilities. You'll develop professional skills using industry-standard tools and high-performance computing resources, working on real-world computing challenges. This hands-on approach is delivered through:
Specialist Computing Facilities: Access to BU's High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and dedicated computing labs with professional-grade workstations for software development and research.
Industry-Standard Software: Practical work with programming languages including Java, Python, and C++, plus development environments like Visual Studio and database management systems.
Substantial Individual Project: A major research project where you apply advanced computing techniques to solve a substantial real-world problem.
Professional Collaboration: Opportunities to work on projects with industry partners and BU's research centres, including the Data Science and AI Research Centre.
Graduates of De Montfort University's Digital Forensics MSc pursue roles as digital forensics investigators, cyber security analysts, incident response specialists, and security consultants in law enforcement, government agencies, consultancies, and commercial IT firms:
DMU's dedicated placement unit and Careers Team provide CV support, mock interviews, job fairs, and optional one-year industry placements.
High employability (95.8% in work/study within 15 months per HESA); competitive salaries in cyber forensics/security.
Partnerships with Cyber Security Centre and 7Safe deliver industry-standard labs and joint modules for practical skills.
Seven industry-recognized professional certificates enhance long-term credentials for cyber roles.
Strong outcomes in consultancy, software houses, project management, or PhD paths.
Further Academic Progression: Graduates can advance to PhD research in digital forensics or cyber security at DMU, building on their MSc project and modules like artefact analysis.
