MSC Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Keele University

Program Overview

The MSc Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at Keele is a one-year full-time programme aimed at students from STEM and non-STEM backgrounds who want to build skills in AI, data analytics, and modern computing practices. It includes foundational modules in mathematics and programming, followed by modules in cloud computing, machine learning, databases, visualisation, and a major project or placement.

Curriculum Structure:
In the first semester you’ll take Mathematical Techniques for Computational Sciences, Foundations of Programming and Software Engineering, and Cloud Computing. These give you mathematical foundations, basic programming skills (especially in Python), software engineering practices, plus understanding of cloud architecture and related concerns like security and privacy.  Then in the second semester you study Data Management and Cloud Technologies, Advanced Applications of AI and Machine Learning, and related modules covering databases, visualisation, deep learning, NLP or computer vision. These modules allow you to apply theory to practical AI/data problems.

Focus areas
“Programming & Software Engineering; Mathematics for AI & Data Science; Cloud Computing; Data Management & Databases; Machine Learning & Deep Learning; Visualisation; AI Applications & Project Work”

Learning outcomes
“Acquire and apply technical skills in programming & AI; understand and use statistical & mathematical tools; design, implement and evaluate machine learning models; manage data & cloud infrastructures; complete independent research or industry project”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Course designed with input from employers (Employer Steering Group), includes optional placement, and aims to match industry needs.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Keele Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021: about 80% of relevant research ‘world-leading or internationally excellent’; graduates have moved into roles in data science, web dev, systems analysis etc.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Your learning is built around mastering the essential, practical skills that form the foundation of a successful tech career:

  • Dedicated Computing Laboratories: Your teaching will take place in our modern computing labs located in the Chancellor's Building. These are equipped with high-specification PCs and all the professional software you need for programming, database management, and systems development.

  • Industry-Standard Software & Tools: From the very start, you'll gain hands-on experience with the essential tools of the trade. This includes programming languages like Java and Python, integrated development environments (IDEs), database systems, and version control with Git.

  • Practical, Project-Based Learning: A core part of your experience will be applying your skills through projects. You'll work on practical assignments and team-based tasks that simulate real-world development challenges, helping you build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your capabilities to employers.

  • Collaborative Development: The programme includes opportunities for collaborative work, allowing you to develop teamworking and project management skills that are essential in a professional software development environment.

  • Individual MSc Project: The programme culminates in a substantial individual project. This is your chance to bring all your learning together to create a significant software application or conduct an in-depth investigation in your chosen area of interest.

  • Extensive University Resources: You will have full access to Keele University’s Campus Library, which includes a vast collection of computing texts, e-books, and online journals, as well as 24/7 access to computing facilities and study spaces.
