MSc Artificial Intelligence

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Manchester Metropolitan University

Program Overview

The MSc Artificial Intelligence at MMU is a 12-month full-time programme (with optional placement) for graduates with some computing, maths or technical background. It gives you core AI skills in machine learning, algorithms, reasoning & knowledge representation, and lets you personalise via special modules and a master’s project.

Curriculum Structure:
You’ll take units like Algorithms and Data Structures, Advanced Machine Learning, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Robotics Science and Systems, and Machine Learning Concepts. These develop your fundamental programming & algorithmic thinking, plus deeper understanding of statistical learning, reasoning in AI systems and robotics & autonomous systems. Then you complete an in-depth master’s project, applying what you’ve learned to a real AI problem under faculty supervision. This helps build practical problem-solving, experiment design, and presentation skills.

Focus areas
“Machine Learning; Knowledge Representation & Reasoning; Algorithms; Robotics Systems; AI Project”

Learning outcomes
“Ability to design & implement AI/ML algorithms; understand and use reasoning systems; work with robotics/AI systems; conduct independent AI research & complete project work”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
MMU's AI programme is part of the Institute of Coding; it emphasizes industry-relevant skills and offers optional placement to boost employability.

Reputation (employability rankings):
86% of MMU’s research outputs in Computer Science were rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2021.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is designed to bridge advanced AI theory with practical application, ensuring you graduate with the hands-on skills needed to build and deploy intelligent systems. You will develop these skills using the University's high-performance computing infrastructure and industry-standard software, working on real-world AI challenges. This practical approach is embedded throughout the curriculum through key components:

  • High-Performance Computing (HPC): You will have access to the University's High-Performance Computing cluster, providing the computational power needed for training complex machine learning models and processing large-scale datasets.

  • Specialist AI Laboratories: The programme utilises dedicated computing labs equipped with advanced workstations and specialised hardware for AI development and data-intensive projects.

  • Industry-Standard Software and Tools: The curriculum involves extensive practical work with core programming languages like Python, and major machine learning libraries and platforms including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and scikit-learn.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A core component is a significant research project where you will apply AI techniques to a substantial real-world problem, developing a complete solution from data processing to model deployment and evaluation.

  • Practical, Project-Based Modules: Learning is reinforced through hands-on coursework that involves building and training neural networks, developing intelligent agents, and creating machine learning models using real-world datasets and scenarios.
